Obgleich im Leben eine sehr bekannte Erscheinung, ist der Commis doch noch niemals zum Gegenstand einer schriftlichen Erörterung gemacht worden. Er ist vielleicht zu alltäglich, zu unschuldig, zu wenig blass und verdorben, zu wenig interessant, der junge schüchterne Mann mit der Schreibfeder und der Rechentafel in der Hand, um den Herrn Dichtern als Stoff zu dienen. Mir indessen dient er gerade.
Auch wenn der Begriff "Commis" heutzutage nicht mehr aktuell erscheint, sind doch die Germers, Helblinge, Meiers vom Land und aus der Stadt in jedem Büro noch immer dieselben: Als kleine Angestellte fechten sie stille Kämpfe mit Vorgesetzten, beäugen sich untereinander, sehnen die Mittagspause herbei und freuen sich aufs Wochenende, an dem sie für einmal der stickigen Büroluft entkommen.
Selten ist das Leben in und um die Büros schöner beleuchtet und beobachtet worden als in Robert Walsers Prosastücken.
