Il Valentino ha bisogno di qualcuno che – in forma anonima e ben pagato – stenda una sua biografia, per ribattere alle tante “calunnie” che circolano su di lui e sceglie proprio Machiavelli per farlo. Niccolò accetta per poterlo spiare meglio. Anni dopo, quando Cesare sarà già morto, Niccolò riverserà questa sua consapevolezza in uno scritto che intitolerà Il Principe. Verrà pubblicato postumo.
