Mentre lo stesso Aleksej racconta come viene posseduto dal demone del gioco d'azzardo, attorno a lui si svolgono le vicende di un gruppo di personaggi alquanto pittoreschi: un vecchio generale russo, follemente innamorato di una giovane francese dal passato turbolento, e la sua sdegnosa figliastra Polina; un ricco inglese, onesto e timido, e uno spregiudicato marchese francese; e infine un'energica "baboulinka" (nonnina) russa...
La vicenda viene raccontata dal protagonista come se fosse una confidenza fatta ad un gruppo di amici intimi, e la narrazione procede con un ritmo incalzante scandito da indizi, dubbi, supposizioni e interpretazioni che creano un atmosfera di suspense che solo nel finale trova soluzione.
