Questo racconto fu completato da Tolstoj nel 1889, fu poi aggiunta una variante al finale, e , infine, pubblicato postumo nel 1911.Lo scrittore allude nell’opera alla sua relazione amorosa avuta con una contadina. Tolstoj fece leggere l'opera al figlio Lev (che gli aveva confidato di essere turbato da pensieri di donne), ma poi tenne il manoscritto nascosto alla moglie, dentro una poltrona. La moglie lo trovò nel maggio 1909 e ne seguì una violenta lite. Come è noto, lo scrittore si allontanò poi da casa l’anno successivo.Cornice musicale: Petrushka, di Igor Stravinsky.
