About this listen

Random House presents the audiobook edition of If I Die Before I Wake by Emily Koch, read by Finlay Robertson.

HOW DO YOU SOLVE YOUR OWN MURDER?

Everyone believes Alex is in a coma, unlikely to ever wake up. As his family debate withdrawing life support, and his friends talk about how his girlfriend Bea needs to move on, he can only listen.

But Alex soon begins to suspect that the accident that put him here wasn’t really an accident. Even worse, the perpetrator is still out there and Alex is not the only one in danger.

As he goes over a series of clues from his past, Alex must use his remaining senses to solve the mystery of who tried to kill him, and try to protect those he loves, before they decide to let him go.

A stunning edge-of-your-seat debut novel with an unforgettable narrator.

Critic Reviews

This is a debut to be reckoned with. (Barry Forshaw)
The author conveys a real sense of the true horror of being locked inside a body that won’t move with a brain that still works. And she persuades us to stay with the story to its strangely exhilarating conclusion. (Christina Appleyard)
If I Die Before I Wake is a captivating thriller by an exciting new voice. I read it in two days because I had to know who did it! Koch keeps you guessing until the very end.
I loved If I Die Before I Wake. I was completely gripped - a sign of a true story-teller. It's utterly compelling and has an ending that will rip the heart out of you.
A great premise and really beautifully written, with a very moving ending.
A crucial decision in fiction writing is point of view, and Koch, having found a striking angle, makes compelling use of it. (Mark Lawson)
Gripping from the outset and beautifully told, If I Die Before I Wake sucks you in and stays with you long after the final page (Jo Jakeman, author of Sticks and Stones)
One of the most intriguing premises I’ve ever seen in a crime novel… This is a tense, suspenseful novel which slowly builds up into an absolute page turner… this novel definitely establishes Koch’s name as an exciting writer in crime fiction (Milly Munro)

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No. The book was slow and there were many inconsistancies. The theory of the story was great but it was not well executed.

Did Finlay Robertson do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?

Yes, I enjoyed his style of narration

This was a brave idea... to write the whole book from someone in a comas point of view. Problem is listening to it almost puts you in a coma of your own. So many chapters that just ramble on with no real connection to the story. The ending had a good, if unrealistic twist. I also liked the honesty of the ending.
