Publisher's Summary

The incredible true story of the death of Jimmy Hoffa, the most famous hit in Mafia history. Now a major motion picture.

The Irishman is an epic saga of organised crime in postwar America told through the eyes of World War II veteran Frank Sheeran, a hustler and hit man who worked for legendary crime boss Russell Bufalino alongside some of the most notorious figures of the 20th century.

Spanning decades, Sheeran's story chronicles one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in American history, the disappearance of legendary union boss Jimmy Hoffa, and it offers a monumental journey through the hidden corridors of organized crime: its inner workings, rivalries and connections to mainstream politics.

Sheeran would rise to a position of such prominence that in a RICO suit against the Commission of La Cosa Nostra, the US government would name him as one of only two non-Italians in conspiracy with the Commission. Sheeran is listed alongside the likes of Anthony 'Tony Pro' Provenzano and Anthony 'Fat Tony' Salerno. In the course of nearly five years of recorded interviews, Sheeran confessed to Charles Brandt that he handled more than 25 hits for the mob, and Brandt turned Sheeran's story into a true crime classic.

Would you ever listen to anything by Charles Brandt again?

No probably not

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Interesting book with a weird narrator

It took alot of listens to get through this, I found the narrator difficult to listen. He sounded like a Italian American impersonator instead of a gruff Irish American.

Brilliant

A well written book that is so informative and takes you to every place of action. I now have a better understanding of how and why things work in the other lifestyle! The JFK is very interesting as is the death of Jimmy Hoffa! You should read this!

Soon to be a major motion picture

An excellent and fascinating exposè on organised crime. The Hoffa story was riveting. Connections to a certain event in Dallas in 1963 were mindblowing. I can't wait for the Scorsese film.

Great story definitely worth a listen.

Great story and one that is definitely worthy of your audio library. It has changed the way I look at that era and has and also changed my opinion on past historical events.

Fantastic

Well narated. This story is sensational but you come away at the end believing it all. It's quite credible and paints an amazing picture of the life of Frank Shearan and the death of Jimmy Hoffa (as well as touching on the deaths of JFK, LHO & Bobby Kennedy). What an insight.

The book is a real eye opener into the Nadia. It gets heavy in the middle for an hour but the end makes up for it. Fantastic book

Mystery Solved, Mind Blown

I know the film is coming so wanted to get through the book first and I couldn't stop. I listened as I drove, walked and between shifts. Incredible to think this s out there and people still doubt. A LOT of bonus / extra material that slams home the truth behind 'The Irishman'. Can't recommend highly enough.

Take with a trailer-truck's worth of salt

Any additional comments?

Co-incidentally, I had just watched a documentary about the Hoffa disappearance a few days before beginning this audiobook. A number of the protagonists statements jarred with this book. This put a seed of doubt into my head as to the authenticity. By the end of the book, I honestly had a hard time believing anything he said. Some of it was just completely unbelievable and outlandish, and the author never provides us with a truly convincing reason why Sheeran changed his story so often.

As other reviewers have commented, the author did have the habit of annoyingly shoehorning himself into the story, and there was a lot of padding and waffle that could easily have been cut. Narration was above average, though.

Overall, it does provide insight into how these types of people think and behave. But that's if you read between the lines, and not what they actually say.
