Publisher's Summary

An innocent game. A shocking crime. A community full of secrets.

Mapledon, 1989.

Two little girls were out playing a game of dares. Only one returned home. The 10-year-old told police what she saw: village loner Bill ‘Creepy’ Cawley dragged her friend into his truck and disappeared. No body was found, but her testimony sent Cawley to prison for murder. An open and shut case, the right man behind bars. The village could sleep safe once again.

Now....

Anna thought she had left Mapledon and her nightmares behind, but a distraught phone call brings her back to face her past. Thirty years ago, someone lied. Thirty years ago, the man convicted wasn’t the only guilty party. Now he’s out of prison and looking for revenge. The question is, who will he start with?

Awful Ending

I really enjoyed this story, until the end. The chapter's were short and revealing to keep you wanting more. But the ending was horrible! Loose ends and unanswered questions. How could "this person" possibly know "this"? What possible reason would "this person" do "this"? Even the minor dialogue was simply stupid, like a different author.

mixed feelings but overall good

A little hard to follow with different timelines and different people. Decent story with lots of twists but could have told the same story in less time. Finished nicely, great narration.

I fell asleep so many times...

I knew it was a mistake to get this book knowing Kristin Atherton was narrating. She has such a lifeless voice that just drones on. But I'd been really curious about this author and the summary piqued my curiously even more. I should have followed my instincts. I fell asleep on this book no less than 7 times. I had to keep going back and listening. But I have to be honest, I don't think this was entirely Atherton's fault - this time. I think the book dragged. There were parts that were just drawn out and unnecessary. And having two of the characters change their names was extremely confusing. For half the book I'd thought a third girl had been playing the dare game and had died. Also, the whole thing felt extremely implausible. I wish we'd been more privy to the friendship between Muriel and Tina and seen how that got ruined. Then I might have cared more about this story. And why did we flashback to the death and move backwards? I get that the author was trying to do something different but it was all just confusing and there was no real pay off. The end was not worth all that drawn out drama. I wish I could say more but I'm so exhausted from listening to this thing. I do hope Atherton will improve or do non fiction.
