Smart men never dabble with demons. I never claimed to be smart, but at least, I’m powerful enough to control them. When I bound Havoc to me nearly 300 years ago, I never realized how difficult he’d make my life, although “accidentally” lighting him on fire every now and then does bring a smile to my face. Havoc is handsome, mysterious, and somehow, my closest companion, even if we don’t always get along.

Publisher's Summary
Something old, something new, something borrowed...something blacker than the darkest night.
Cosmo Saville adores his new husband, but his little white lies and some very black magic are about to bring their fairy tale romance to an end. Someone is killing San Francisco's spell casters, and the only person Cosmo can turn to - the man who so recently swore to love and cherish him - isn't taking his phone calls.
The only magic police commissioner John Joseph Galbraith believes in is true love. Discovering he’s married to a witch - one with something alarmingly like magical powers - is nearly as bad as discovering the man he loved tricked and deceived him.
John shoulders the pain of betrayal and packs his bags. But when he learns Cosmo is in the crosshairs of a mysterious and murderous plot, he knows he must do everything in in his mortal power to protect him.
Till death do them part. With their relationship on the rocks, Cosmo and Galbraith join forces to uncover the shadowy figure behind the deadly conspiracy.
Can the star-crossed couple bring down a killer before the dark threat extinguishes love’s flame?

I want to love it...
So I just finished I Buried a Witch after also reading the first of the series. This is a book that I desperately want to love. The main character, Cosmo, is fantastic! He is witty, charming, and smart. I adore the storyline regarding the Craft and the intrigue regarding that part of his life. However, this series struggles because of the main romance. There is no way around it, John is a terrible, awful, toxic character. John and Cosmo's relationship is toxic and I would say borders on emotional abuse. Yet the author spends both books wanting us to fall in love with John and ultimately root for him and Cosmo to live happily ever after. Honestly, I am not ok with that!
This story has so much potential but the longer John is in the picture and the more he forces Cosmo to turn his back on his family and friends the worse it becomes. THIS BOOK DOES NOT DEFINE A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP!!!!!

Enthralling...
First, I adore Josh Lanyon's writing and this series is no different. As is the case in much of life, there is a however. I really enjoy Cosmo's character and I really do not like John's. I am trying to follow along and adopt their love story intermixed with the craft and such, but through much of this book I wanted to just slap the fool out of both of them...Cosmo for being a door mat and John for being such a douche. Sounds harsh I know and the sad truth is that their relationship, based on the dynamics of it, is expectable. That doesn't mean that I have to like it ;-). With all that said, I am still enthralled with the premise of this story and I cannot wait for the next one to be available and see where this interesting couple goes from here.

Again Brilliant mesh of romance, mystery, & magic
Audiobook Review April 2021:
When I saw Josh Lanyon released book 3, I thought what better time to listen to book 2 prior to jumping in. Just as brilliant as I remembered. Again Kale Williams brings life to Cosmo and John as he did in Mainly by Moonlight and I can't think of another narrator who could further their journey better. I'm not going to touch on any real points of the story for those who have yet to begin this series, the mystery is just so expertly crafted I wouldn't want to spoil that for anyone. I still wanted to smack John with a cast iron skillet at times, though as I said in the original review, as much as was frustrated and borderline angry with him in those moments I also could see his side of the situation seeing as his view of the world was turned on edge with the whole "magic is real" discovery. As for Cosmo, well again my first instinct is to wrap him in Mama Bear hugs for support but he also has a habit of "speak first think second" and I find myself wanting to shake him, saying "shut up, take a breath, then speak". These blended warring moments of arguing and loving is why I love Josh Lanyon's storytelling so much. Despite where their journey is at the moment, I still love them together and I can't wait to see where Bell, Book, and Scandal takes them.
Original Review January 2020 Book of the Month:
I Buried a Witch picks up practically right where book 1(Mainly by Moonlight) ended so if you're looking for a beginning and an ending with all the resolutions tied up in nice pretty bow you're in the wrong place. If you love romance mixed with mystery and magic then you have found a series not to be missed.
I can certainly understand how some might not like John, he's definitely got plenty of qualities that aren't all smiles but he just found out that his new husband is a witch and that many aspects of the paranormal he's only found in books and movies are quite real, that's going to throw anyone for a loop. Don't get me wrong, I wanted to smack him upside the head with a cast iron skillet more times than I wanted to cuddle him but I get where his reality has been forever changed so it was easy for me to cut him some slack.
As for Cosmo, I still want to smother him in Mama Bear Hugs but I also wish I could get him to take a breath or two before he blurts out stuff. There are times I want Cosmo to be more assertive but there are also times when I'm screaming "SHUT UP!!" They are both complex characters that continue to find their place in the world, professionally, personally, and magically. It's no wonder they're as screwed up as they are.
The mystery just keeps unfolding and getting better and better. I can't help but think the Witch Killer isn't completely solved yet or only part of a bigger picture or perhaps it is all said and done and the next one is a whole new who done it(after all magical mysteries play on a whole different level in my mind), either scenario has me on pins and needles waiting to see where Josh Lanyon takes this in book 3: Bell, Book, and Scandal.
In my review of book 1 I wrote "I loved how it made me nostalgic for the endearing comedy of Bewitched, the magical drama of Charmed, and the spell-driven romance of I Married a Witch. Magic, romance, murder, spells, mystery, these are all there.", well there may not be quite as much humor but honestly I don't think I can sum up I Buried a Witch any better.

Bewitching story with a charming narrator
I have been a fan of Josh Lanyon’s for a while but usually steer clear of paranormal. The first book in this series was available on audio from my library so I hesitantly gave it a shot. So glad I did. The characters are well written and Lanyon weaves a fun combination of our world with witchy customs overrepresented. Cosmo is an engaging character and the narrator is very good although the French pronunciation could use some practice. Lanyon’s genre is romance but these books are really wonderful as mysteries as well, some of the best combined I’ve read. There’s a perfect mixture of plot with love. The love story is especially well developed, with Cosmo learning about himself and what truly makes a fair and healthy relationship as the story continues. Looking forward to the final installment.

Can't wait for book 3 to come on audio
Okay I'm just going to put it out there that I was very hesitant at first about getting this book series it didn't really seem like something I would want to buy really listen to. Don't get me wrong I like the whole aspect of witches and Magic and mystery in fantasy so it had me there. But I don't know what it was about it adjust wasn't feeling the story when I read the synopsis. However it started what the heck I was running out of stories to listen to and so I got it. Turned out I actually really liked it and so I ended up buying the second in the series. It was a good story good mystery going on good narrator my opinion could be a little longer I mean 6 hours seems like a long time but when you listen to it that time just seems to fly by. I really can't wait for book 3 to come out on audio.

entertaining second instalment
Would I listen to it again: yes
Did the story keep me engaged: yes
Was I invested in the characters: yes
Story comment: good second instalment, easy listen, characters are likeable and there is still enough going on to keep me interested.
Narrator comment: I enjoyed Kale William's narration and think he's done a good job narrating I Buried a Witch. I don't speak the multiple languages he's had to do, but the accents all sounded believable, I had no problem distinguishing characters and the rhythm, inflections and intonations all worked to bring the book to life.
I look forward to the next instalment.

I can't wait for the next one!
This is such a fun series. I was so pissed off at the first book not tying up anything and leaving me hanging, but the second book of the series had some super satisfying moments that made up for it and then some. I'm so looking forward to the third book in the series. There is nothing else quite like these books out there, and it's really fun to be in this world of magic. Josh Lanyon has written some of my favorite magic fantasy mm books and always makes them super original, gets me emotionally involved, and has a very sophisticated writing style. The love interests are always a bit hard edged but it makes them pretty sexy. The mc of this story is very interesting and a different sort of character than I've read about before. He's intelligent and resourceful and kind and capable. He doesn't always make the choices I would make, but it's always clear why he makes his choices. He's much more sympathetic than the love interest so far, who seems super hot, dark, tall , muscular, handsome, badass and scary, but not all that loving or capable of empathy, appreciating anyone who's different, etc. We know that he's damaged from a past in the military, and that somehow he does seem to love the mc, so I hope we'll get insight into his heart sometime too and see that he actually likes the mc as well as loves him, and I can't wait for a moment when they might both be on the same team so to speak, and work together and for him to appreciate the mc and regard him as an equal. He started off viewing him in a condescending way as some sort of nutjob who was endearingly cute, but then switches to being disgusted and almost scared of him, so we'll see what the next transition is.

Spectacular!
I absolutely love - love this series! Wonderful characters, creative *magical* plots, hot romancin’, and beautifully written, as all of Josh Lanyon’s stories are.
Cosmo is a total doll, and John is all the good things a Lanyon dreamboat should be. I can’t wait to see what happens next for these guys.
Performed by Kale Williams, I adore what he brings to these characters in the audio version of I Buried a Witch. His smooth, sensual voice is perfect for the romantic scenes, and the light-hearted delivery of Cosmo is just perfect for this cutie.
It’s a wonderful story, made even better in audio.
