Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of The Rise of Nine by Pittacus Lore, read by Neil Kaplan, Devon Sorvari and Marisol Ramirez. Until I met John Smith, Number Four, I’d been on the run alone, hiding and fighting to stay alive. Together we are much more powerful. But it could only last so long before we had to separate to find the others... I went to Spain to find Seven, and I found even more, including a tenth member of the Garde who escaped from Lorien alive.

Story
I thought things would change when I found the others. We would stop running. We would fight the Mogadorians. And we would win. But I was wrong. Even though we have come together, we barely escaped from them with our lives. And now we're in hiding, figuring out our next move. The six of us are powerful - but not strong enough to take on their entire army. We haven't discovered the full extent of our Legacies. We haven't learned to work together. Time is running out, and there's only one thing we know for certain: We need to find Number Five before they do.

Kids stuff
The story was immature, too many holes and lack of continuity. Though it was science fiction the story lacks a level of realism or believability. Stories I read have to be logical , people's actions in different circumstances were odd.

Listen to a sample before you buy
With "I Am Number Four" being made into a Hollywood blockbuster, and with what appeared to be an interesting storyline, I was eager to add this title to my growing audio book collection for the commute to and from work.
The initial premise is good: 9 Lorians and their Keepers escape to Earth from their home planet, only to be hunted down by the Mogadorians. The Lorians can only be killed by the Mogardorians in numerical sequence. John Smith, our hero, is Lorian Number 4, and with when One Two and Three are killed, he knows it's only a matter of time before they come for him.
I wish I could tell you more about the story, but in all honesty I stopped listening at chapter 4. The narrator, Adam Kaplan, drove me insane and is the sole reason I stopped listening to this book. His 'normal', John Smith voice is barely tolerable (while I know that this is a YA book, Kaplan's almost Valley Girl tone for John grates after awhile) - and the voices he uses for the female characters and other male characters was enough to make me rip my earbuds from my head in disgust (Although his Henri - gravelly, French - is wonderful). I urge you to listen to a sample of the book before you spend money on it. I myself will be heading down to the library to find a hard copy version so I can find out what happens to John without Kaplan's annoying voice in my head.

Absolutely outstanding
This book is amazing! It takes a while to start up and the performance is slow at the start but as I got an hour or two into the story everything came together perfectly. By the end of the book I was so attached that I was sobbing. I would recommend to anybody who likes sci-fi, action, romance and deep connections with characters.

Cliché love story with super powers
I didn't know what I would think about this book, but I have to say I enjoyed it! However, as soon as I realized that they were supposed to be 15 I was shook. They act much older, but at the same time have the mentality of 12 year olds that make me want to slam my head into a desk. Four's and Sarah's love story moves far too fast in my opinion and it's obvious that this book isn't exactly directed towards people my age (18).
When picking up this book I was looking for something relatively easy going, easy to listen too (as I'm not a native English speaker and would prefer a story with simple words as it relaxes me) and some action. I got all of these, so as far as I'm concerned, this was a good book. I'm already planning on buying the next book in the series once I get my monthly pay.

Interesting
Where does I Am Number Four: Lorien Legacies, Book 1 rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Middle, I'm interested enough to continue with the series and find out what happens.
What other book might you compare I Am Number Four: Lorien Legacies, Book 1 to and why?
Any of the teen novels like Twilight, where there is a teenager coming into powers, falling in love and saving the day.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
The narrators interpretation of female voices had me giggling most times and I would loose concentration on the story because of it, I also thought that, when it came to the lovey dovey stuff he was struggling with not bursting out with laughter at how corny it was.

Nice idea, bad execution
The plot idea is nice, and the writing starts out nice enough, but it really falls off towards the end. All the action scenes are clumsy, many don't make sense. Also - something I dislike in movies, too - the plot only goes forward because the main character behaves exceedingly stupid. Not a great listen, I'm afraid.

Amazing!
This book was amazing and gripping! I listen to books at night; I am only 19 and love my audio books. I find it hard to find books I like more to my personal favourites like The Hunger Games and the Boy Solider books but this one really did put up a good fight! I was up for hours on end just wanting to know what happens next! Well written and well read, I highly recommend this, I cannot wait for the film in February 2011 and the second book 'The Power of Six' 10 out of 10!

Easy listen
I'm giving this 4 stars, not because it's a brilliant story, but because as a young adult / teenage read it's fine! A superman-meets-Percy Jackson, which although predictable in the "alien boy falls in love with human girl" kind of way, it's still a very easy listen, and will undoubtedly appeal to the young adult market. I agree with one of the previous reviewer's comments regarding the kissing....although I have no aversion to the act, there is a tad much of it here, and it does become a little nauseating after a while. It's better than a 3 star, but it does fall short of 5 in that it's just a little too predictable.....
The introduction states the authors name, and then that the book is PERFORMED by Adam Kaplan (as opposed to "narrated by"), and I have to give credit where credit is due - he's pretty good! He sounds like a teenage boy one minute, and then a fifty year old Frenchman the next, and this does make listening easier when it comes to identifying who is who....

Second - it's only 1st of 6 books (so don't expect any definite end)
When reading the book I couldn't help thinking it's a funny mix of ideas I'd already read before (LotR, HP).
If you keep in mind the intended audience then the predictable plot, the 'seen it before' ideas, the black and white world are easier to accept. But if you expect twists and double-depth characters you might be better off skipping this book altogether.
What is unacceptable is the 'romance' bit. And that's in both form and quantity.
This is where the 'teenage' character of the book really stands out. Sickly exchanges, cheesy cliches and too much kissing for my liking. But then again - what do I know.
Altogether - not a complete waste of time but I'm not yet sure if I can take five more books.

For a younger audience than me.
I decided to listen to this rather than see the film and glad I did. It is set really for a younger audience than me and although I enjoyed it - it was not really 'my thing'

Listener must be under 15
I got this audiobook for my partner and myself to listen to in the car when we go on long journeys. We're both in our 30s and we wanted something that doesn't require too much attention (as most of your attention should really be on the driving). Unfortunately this was too far in the "low brow" category. Here are my biggest gripes about this opus:
1.) The voice acting is truly awful.
2.) The plot is juvenile, unimaginative, predictable and totally ridiculous.
3.) Most characters are paper thin caricatures (this isn't helped by the dreadful voice acting) and the internal and external dialogue is ludicrous.
4.) The voice acting is so bad it's infuriating.
Unfortunately for me I'm too stubborn to give up on a book, even when they're this bad. Towards the end I was hoping that someone would stab me in the ear with a Mogodorian dagger as this would certainly have been preferable to having to listen to the by-the-numbers denouement.
I think I will give the remaining 5 installments a miss.

Jarring Narration
I understand this book was written for teenage boys (which I am not) but I enjoyed the story.
The narrator’s voice acting is awful, the accents? Awful. The female voices? Awful. Honestly, I’d recommend just reading the book if only to save your ears from the voice acting which heinously depicts each character!

Better than the film!
The narrator was excellent until he tried to do the voices of female characters, they sounded like he'd taken a mouthful of hellium.
He did protray the suspense and action very well

Great ish
I absolutely loved this story, it's well written and well read my inly issue was that the narrators voice was slightly too deep for the female voices and it sounded like a someone making fun rather than a serious portrait. that is not a criticism of the narrator however I still think he did a great job.
