Ari had a game plan for life: shoot people. Get money. Hang out with fellow criminal friends. He saw absolutely no reason to change that plan until one dark night in Memphis, when a little girl reached out to him with pocket change and a desperate plea for him to help her.

Adopting an abused little girl off the streets was, needless to say, not part of the plan. Ari had no idea what he was doing with an eight year old. He especially didn’t know how to juggle taking contracts and raising a little girl.

Things get more complicated when the mercenary, Carter Harrison, approaches him with a job. He needs Ari’s expertise to get into the very high-security museum, Knowles, and steal back Monet’s Water Lily Pond. The job isn’t an easy one. He’d need more than the two of them to make it happen. It’s further complicated because Ari’s not sure what to do with his new daughter while working this job.

And for that matter, how’s he supposed to handle the sexy mercenary?

This is a ridiculously implausible, highly entertaining story. Heartwarming, slow burn romance, found family, morally grey characters - it ticks so many boxes. The narration is extremely good too. Definitely buying the rest of the trilogy.

This is a really cute story. Ari adopts the wonder Remi. The relationship is very sweet as is Remi’s relationship with her uncles Ivan and Kyou. Add Ari’s love interest Carter and it is a very happy group.

I preferred Toma’s narration to Amato’s but they were both good.

The spice is very limited and vanilla but the story is cute enough to keep you interested.

dragged and I found myself bored and forced my way through the last couple hours.
however I loved the whole dynamic between the 4, and the premise of the story, like a twist on 3 men and a baby

By turns sweet, hilarious, and always in the legal-adjacent grey of making a living, this is a great story and narrated tale of making your own family complete with assassin, thieves, merc’s and hackers. Low angst, high reward, hugely recommended.

I love assassin stories and Iggy Toma already but the Addams Family reference has officially propelled this to my favourite read of the year so far 😁

The author did this thing where they said a word and in the same sentence say the word again when you can just google different words that mean the same thing so that was kind of annoying.
Not enough killing for a book about an assassin this is a heist book with an assassin in it.
On the whole tho an amazing book I couldn’t put it down I highly recommend reading this one

Tw for mentions of rape at the start of the book the assassin beats up the guy and helps the girl escape it’s not graphic and he just explains what he did it’s not in first person it’s past tense. And then again at the end from a different pov same scene it’s a little worse.
And mentions of children being sold to pedos.
All this happened at the very start and very end of the book nothing in between and it doesn’t happen to the little girl who becomes his daughter its a random girl
