About this listen
FEATURING DUET NARRATION.
When Jamie Prescott attends a speed-dating event at the behest of her best friend, Laurie, she expects to meet a roster of mediocre men and have a few laughs. She doesn’t expect one of her dates to have his throat slit at their table during a blackout.
When the lights come back on, there are more bodies on the floor, the doors are locked, and there’s a murderer among them. So much for a fun night.
Armed with makeshift weapons and her extensive knowledge of what NOT to do in a slasher, Jamie must figure out how the hell she and Laurie will make it out of the building alive. But as the night progresses, Jamie begins to suspect the killer is committing the slayings to woo one of the women and turn them into a real-life Final Girl. Whatever happened to roses and perfume?
And why can’t Jamie stay focused on the important thing here, which is obviously not to get murdered, instead of being distracted by a hot guy or two? Especially if one of those hot guys happens to be the bad guy…
Oops.
Laugh-out-loud funny and hide-under-your-bed scary, How to Kill a Guy in Ten Dates puts the killer in killer love story.
Critic Reviews
'Fresh, funny and criminally addictive. I couldn't put it down!' (Hannah Grace, author of Icebreaker)
'Propulsive and cinematic.' (Alicia Thompson, author of Love in the Time of Serial Killers)
‘The genre meet-cute I didn't know I needed! Slick, sexy and impossible to put down. I tore through this, much like . . . well, you'll see.’ (Chloe Elisabeth Wilson, author of Rytual)
'Alternating romance, peril, chemistry, and gore, this is an absolute romp through movie trivia Easter Eggs and fan-favorite tropes.' (Alexia Casale, author of How to Bury Your Husband)
'A genre-blending good time that captures the zeitgeist with its mélange of romantic comedy and horror, movie quotes and Taylor Swift references ... With more than one jump-scare and several potential love interests, the novel’s breathless pace ensured that this reviewer read it in one sitting.'
'Thompson clearly understands not just the demands of genre but also its pleasures ... A delightful celebration of rom-coms, slasher flicks, and the women who love them.'
'This thrilling debut romance, with touches of humor, is well-written and excellently plotted, and the many twists and turns keep the killer’s identity hidden until the very end.'
'Thompson dextrously balances horror and romance tropes ... It’s pure entertainment.'
Unfortunately, the male narrator's voice didn't match the character's age at all, he sounded more like her father or a retired detective, making the romance feel "off" and I found myself skipping the steamy scenes because it felt too jarring and unrealistic.
Plus, the audio levels were inconsistent. I had to constantly turn the volume up every time the MMC spoke and then scramble to turn it down when the FMC returned. It really disrupted the flow of an otherwise great book.
Narrator choice and audio quality ruined the vibe

In saying all that I did finish the book so that in self says it wasn’t bad. I don’t know if it’s because it’s a slasher but I couldn’t connect to the characters, I didn’t think there was much depth to them for me to connect.
However the story it self had me intrigued and I wanted to know who did it and that’s what kept me going. I liked this part of the story and I got use to all the rules. Where it had me going hang on you can’t do that, that’s against the rules lol .
Things I didn’t like was the gore but I got over that and it wasn’t too bad. The main dislike was that in the middle of the story there is some smut (cmon as if you would do that in the middle of what’s going on, I thought it was cringe and really wasn’t needed). If the smut scene wasn’t there I’d give it 3 stars and 7/10 only because I don’t think it was necessary.
Overall I did find it fun and I liked it enough to maybe even try and different slasher story. If you’re into slashers I’d highly recommend it.
If you like thrillers and you like romance and a bit of smut then I’d also recommend it.
