The number-one New York Times best seller.

A detective. As a fierce, unrelenting winter grips Quebec, shadows are closing in on Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. Most of his best agents have left the Homicide Department and hostile forces are lining up against him.

A deadly conclusion. As he begins to shed light on the investigation, he is drawn into a web of murder, lies, and unimaginable corruption at the heart of the city. Facing his most challenging, and personal, case to date, can Gamache save the reputation of the Sûreté, those he holds dear and himself?

Fabulous Addition to a Wonderful Series.

Usually series do not improve with each book but this one does. When I read the first book, Still Life, I was unsure if I would continue with the series. Of course, now I am so pleased that I did. The stories keep getting better, as with each book we learn more of our main characters and the mysteries in each book are also good.
If you have read the previous eight books you will not need any recommendation to grab this book. If you haven't yet read any of this series, I strongly recommend that you start at the first book, as each book builds on the relationships between Gamache and his team members.
Thank you Louise Penny for giving us another wonderful book in this fabulous series.

STUNNING!

I am reading all of the Gamache series in chronological order, as I was hooked from the first. I have been an avid reader all my life (now in my 60s), and while I have been hooked on a few good authors along the way, Louise Penny;s Gamache series has won my heart massively. It's hard to describe how impressed I am at her insight and incredible craft with the dialogue and general banter between the characters, especially when set in the village of Three Pines... the subtle humour woven in, the background knowledge in so many technical as well as general aspects of her story lines is truly stunning. This particular story has gripped me even more than any before it, and they have all been great, but I found myself holding my breath with anxiety and fighting back tears of joy in places, hardly able to bear to leave the story to get on with my own life, and returning to it at every possible opportunity. MUCH respect for Ms Penny indeed, and I already know I shall be totally devastated when I have finished the last instalment of the Gamache series, but am very glad I still have plenty to be getting on with for now.

Well constructed story

I could not stop listening to this story, it's 5AM and I'm still up. Louise Penny is a wonderful story teller and the series has been a joy to explore.

Fantastically gripping and moving

I nearly didn’t make it through to the end it was so gripping! But we’ll worth bearing the tension. Louis Penny really is one of the greatest, this book is fantastic!

Excellent

Wonderful narration of this well written, dark thriller. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I bought it but the previous reviews indicated it would be worth a listen and it certainly was.

another excellent Gamache novel

For me, the pull of these novels is in the extraordinary depth afforded to even minor characters. I can associate with all the villagers and agents, glimpse their motivations, on the way to the great reveal at the end.
The writing is sympathetic and the performance only adds to the overall effect. Quoting one of my favourite Leonard Cohen songs was the icing on the cake.

Just brilliant!

I hope everyone who listens to or reads this book finds as much pleasure as I did! We’re all different so that’s unlikely and that’s ok. That’s part of what makes us human. And I’m in awe of the “humanness” (!) written into this book!

These characters are so real to me, the diabolical, despicable ones, I’ll be happy to see justice served and the good, flawed, broken, caring and talented ones I will miss dearly.

This book was so atmospheric, descriptive, just beautifully written and narrated, (Louise Penny and Adam Sims being a marriage made in audiobook heaven) and tense, made more so by the quite calm of Inspector Gamache.

I’m listening one after the other but I’m torn between wanting to know what happens or whether I should listen to something else between each, to keep these stories in my life for longer!

As you can tell, an author I am not! But a very grateful listener, thank you Ms Penny and Mr Sims. And I am going straight on to the next!

Good story well narrated.

This is my first foray into this series and I really enjoyed it. The characters are interesting and the plot is absorbing. I liked the Canadian setting. I think it would be better to know the backstory of the protagonists but I can revisit once I start at the beginning.

Superb

When you think there is nothing more Louise Penny can add to this series, she writes a book like this. I spent most of it either gasping or in tears - and I’m an author! I thank whoever it was who recommended this series, read superbly by Adam Sims.
