Publisher's Summary

Spraining an ankle is rarely a stroke of luck, but for Lindsay Gordon, jobless in Glasgow, the injury is her introduction to young freelance journalist Rory McLaren and the opening of a new chapter in her life.

Rory's invitation to work alongside her in her booth at the Cafe Virginia is irresistible. From there it is just a short step to political corruption and other juicy stories – all welcome distractions from Lindsay's problems at home, where her long-term lover Sophie has decided to heed the ticking of her biological clock and get pregnant. But when a local car-dealer's stepson is kidnapped, Lindsay and Rory are invited to trade journalism for detection. The trail leads them to St Petersburg and a dangerous snatch-back operation. It's a journey that brings a whole new dimension of risk into Lindsay's life.

Breathless

What a moving and totally human conclusion to Lyndsay's adventures.
Leaving one in no confusion that a totally different adventure is just beginning.
Thank you once again Val and Caroline for bringing their world to life 💕

Not a thriller.

Expected V McD’s usual excellent thriller. Instead it was a TMI lesbian story with the plot rather implausible and scant. V disappointed.

Felt like a hostage

Boring relationship book. I thought it was meant to be a thriller?! Terrible story and don’t try accents if you can’t do them, it’s distracting and sounds stupid.

A predictable outcome

I had high expectations of this book having enjoyed Val McDermind's other titles very much. This story, however, seemed to reveal itself too early. The reader's very strong local accent masked other accents she tried to mimic from Russion to Geordie and that became very distracting.

Gave up - the story wasn’t enough to make up for the very poor narration.

I usually like VMc’s books but the narration was so wrong that I gave up. I cannot understand how this made it to Audible - surely someone should have been quality checking. The accents this “narrator” tried were so bad they were almost funny. There wasn’t a single accent that sounded remotely right! They were all so bad it is difficult to pick a winner but the geordie & northern Irish were equally dreadful.

Sadly, I had to stop listening but on the bright side I did get this on a special offer - still feel it was a wasted a credit!

Ruined by the narrator

This was a goof story with many twists and turns. The narration was however awful with numerous unsuccessful attempts at regional or international accents. It’s such a shame.

Pros and cons

Having read other books in this series I thought this story had a good storyline with various twists and turns. The ending was a bit far-fetched but otherwise very imaginative. Unfortunately the accents (especially Northern Irish) were somewhat off the mark which took away from the listening enjoyment in places.
