Classic

I found the storytelling to be over complicated, long winded and repetitive when describing objects, aesthetics and environments and was able to anticipate most endings. The narrator was ok but when he did voices for some characters it was almost impossible to understand or just plain ear torture. I don't regret the time I took to listen to this story though as the lore of Cthulhu and the necronomicon was what I wanted to learn about but the style of story telling is vastly changed since Lovecraft's time.

Excellent storytelling, terrible narration

The narrator is too fast and the kindle version of this collection has stories missing.

No story titles!

Excellent stories from dark worlds, well narrated but there are no story titles, only chapters. no way of knowing where one story ends and another begins.

As Good as It Gets

Ian Gordon is the best self-published narrator I have come across. He has a passion for both Lovecraft and other Weird Tales authors which seriously come across in his readings. When you combine his zeal with an essential collection HPL's works, this is a glorious purchase.

Ian Gordon is the best.

In some sleepy and unnamed village, a child was born under the full moon of Samhain. The product of union between a muse and the dank night itself, Ian was named after his great grandfather, rumored to be the town crier of R'lye. The celestial cyclopian lantern illuminated the birth of such offspring, destined to chant the darkness. Ian Gordon is incredible, not only in his performance, but also in delivery of what his many fans desire... the dark ease that flows in his every utterance. I have many good readings of the same material, but his is my favorite of each selection. My only possible criticism is that I would prefer titles rather than chapter numbers for navigation.

The Title is true to its word.

Im actually new to horror-babble. But I have yet to find any other place on the entire internet for horror audiobooks. The Narrator has a perfect voice and does a great job capturing the horror of Lovecraft. If you want to listen to Lovecraft audiobooks this is the best place to listen. You wont be disappointed.

Very Good, let down by Audible's lack of features

Edit to add: Lovecraft had horrible racist views and it is apparent in many of the stories. Having read the books a number of times I find myself simultaneously appreciating the writing more but the racism becomes more apparent and offsets this. This isn't horrorbabbles problem, but as I give the stories a 5 star review I feel I should point that out. The performance and quality is very good in my opinion. It is a shame audible doesn't have features to name each chapter, that makes this type of collections very hard to navigate... Also Audible, let us organise our own libraries into categories of our own choosing, I have 100's of books and it is a nightmare to find what I want to listen to. OK here is me doing Audibles job... The contents of this Audiobook are as follows, each chapter number corresponds to these books, chapter 1 is an intro. Some of the larger books are split into separate chapters, I have labelled these as 2 3 4 etc. So Chapter 19 is The Dunwitch Horror part 5. Apologies if not spelled correctly. I am currently listening to 9: The Hound The narrator does a good job, I think the voice matches the books well, I find it easy to listen to at night going to sleep and I have no issues with quality thus far. 2 The Colour Out of Space 3 From Beyond 4 He 5 The Rats In the Walls 6 cool Air 7 The Music Of Eric Zan 8 The Nameless City 9 The Hound 10 2 11 The Festival 12 The Call of Cthulhu 13 2 14 3 15 The Dunwitch Horror 16 2 17 3 18 4 19 5 20 6 21 7 22 8 23 9 24 10 25 The Whisperer in Darkness 26 2 27 3 28 4 29 5 30 6 31 7 32 8 33 The Dreams In The Witch House 34 At The Mountains Of Madness 35 2 36 3 37 4 38 5 39 6 40 7 41 8 42 9 43 10 44 11 45 12 46 The Shadow Over Innsmouth 47 2 48 3 49 4 50 5 51 The Shadow Out of Time 52 2 53 3 54 4 55 5 56 6 57 7 58 8 59 The Haunter of the Dark 60 The Thing on the Doorstep 61 The History of the Necronomicon 62 Fungi from Yuggoth 63 Old Bugs 64 In the Vault 65 The Curse of Yig 66 The Temple 67 The Challenge from Beyond 68 The Mound 69 2 70 3 71 4 72 5 73 6 74 7 75 The Tomb 76 The Disinterment 77 Polaris 78 The White Ship 79 The Doom that came to Sarnath 80 The Cats of Ulthar 81 Celaphais 82 Ex Oblivione 83 Nyarlathotep 84 The Quest of Irenon 85 The Other Gods 86 Azathoth 87 Hypnos 88 What the Moon Brings 89 The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath 90 2 91 3 92 The Outsider 93 The Silver Key 94 The Strange High House in the Mist 95 Through the Gates of the Silver Key 96 The Horror at Red Hook 97 The Men of Stone 98 The Lurking Fear 99 Out of the Aeons 100 The Case of Charles Dexter Ward 101 2 102 3 103 4 104 5 105 The Shunned House

The best adaptation to date.

As someone who's been reading HPL since I was about 11 (I'm now in my 40s) I've listened to a lot of adaptations from radio plays to society adaptations and everywhere in between. Thus far, no one has been able to read in such a manner that WORKED for me, be it due to their timbre, speed or pronunciation of words..or so I thought. A friend, knowing of my love for Lovectaft's works directed me to the YouTube channel for Horrorbabble and my love for Ian's work was born. With great production values, a voice well suited to the style of writing and an clear understanding of the use of speed and volume in expressing suspense, Ian brings the work to life.

Awful narrator

I would have thoroughly enjoyed listening to this if I didn't have to turn the volume down every time there was a female voice to narrate...... screechy and unbearable at those points. As others have commented, it would have been great if the individual stories were more clearly segmented. Great author, brilliant content but sadly ruined for me by the narrator.

It’s Lovecraft...

The narration is good, one of the better productions out there of Lovecraft’s almost complete works. At the end of the day, it is Lovecraft - you’ve probably heard the stories a dozen times before. They’re classics for a reason and there is no real way to summarise this many stories - some are better than others. However, something that I would like to see rectified is not calling the chapters chapters, except where there are literally more chapters to a story than just one. Navigating over 50 hours of audio solely via Chapters is really a problem, even if the list of chapters and corresponding stories is written at the “page” for the book it is still an unnecessary step for the listener to go through in order to find the story he or she wants to listen to. Other long audiobooks has fixed this issue, those by H.P Lovecraft historical society for instance, which means HorrorBabble can fix this too.

Excellent narration

Ian Gordon is the most skilled narrator I have come across on Audible by a long way. Will definitely be purchasing more recordings from HorrorBabble. Lovecraft’s stories are classics and require no comment.
