Juste avant la révolution d'Octobre, Dimitri Radzanov et Horowitz s'affrontent en duel au piano au conservatoire de Kiev. Chassés par les Bolcheviks, les deux jeunes gens doivent fuir l'Ukraine. Horowitz émigre aux États-Unis où il rencontre vite fortune et gloire. Radzanov, quant à lui, après avoir servi dans la garde blanche, échoue en banlieue parisienne avec sa mère. Il entre comme chimiste aux usines Pathé Marconi à Chatou où, ironie du sort, il va fabriquer des disques pour son vieux rival Horowitz qui fait vibrer les foules outre-Atlantique. Mais il n'a pas renoncé à la musique et les duels vont reprendre, à distance, pour le plus grand bonheur de son fils...
