Publisher's Summary

A breathtaking mystery of love, lies and a cold case come back to life, told with Morton's trademark intricacy and beauty.

Adelaide Hills, Christmas Eve, 1959. At the end of a scorching hot day, beside a creek in the grounds of a grand and mysterious house, a local deliveryman makes a terrible discovery. A police investigation is called, and the small town of Tambilla becomes embroiled in one of the most shocking and perplexing murder cases in the history of South Australia.

Many years later and thousands of miles away, Jess is a journalist in search of a story. Having lived and worked in London for nearly two decades, she now finds herself laid off from her full-time job and struggling to make ends meet. Until a phone call out of nowhere summons her back to Sydney, where her beloved grandmother, Nora, has suffered a fall and been raced to the hospital.

At Nora’s house, Jess discovers a true crime book that chronicles the police investigation into a long-buried event: the Turner Family Tragedy of Christmas Eve, 1959. It is only when Jess skims through the pages that she finds a shocking connection between her own family and this once-infamous scandal – a murder mystery that has never been resolved satisfactorily.

Claire Foy Can’t Do Accents

Why oh why is an English actress who hasn’t mastered an Australian accent, narrating this novel? Foy s distressingly awful. It’s not as if there aren’t any number of Australian women who would probably have cost less and done a far better job. Claudia Karvan anyone?

Story is great. Such a shame it’s not read by an Aussie

The story was great and developed well. The attempt at putting on an Aussie accent really failed, which took away from the book a lot.

Slow story and bad accents!

As an Australian, I could not get pass the beyond terrible attempt at our accent. I really wish that an Australian had narrated, it would have been a huge improvement.

The book itself was ok. The first 60% of the book was painfully slow, and could have been edited down. However I enjoyed the last 20% once I finally got there.

Captivating

Kate Morton! This is a captivating story. I love how you weave the colours of Australia, personalities and circumstances into this.
Really, I think you just keep getting better. The only drawback for me was the narrator. Claire Foy has a great voice to listen too, but not a good Australian accent.

The terrible accent ruins a good book

Great book with great characters. I wish I’d read this as opposition listening to it. The terrible accent through out just ruins it. However if you’re able to get past it, it’s a great story with great characters.

Make sure you stick with it!

I am a big Kate Morton fan, but I found this story very disparate. Lots and lots of details and flashback hard to keep track of.
But then, when there was about 4 hours to go everything suddenly comes together right up until the end.
Lots of surprises but they made sense given the life experiences and trauma each character has been through.
I ended up listening twice - the second time I knew the ending and the clues the author put in are definitely there.

Narrator - overall really good but I kept hearing "Laura" instead of Nora, and also "Holly" or "Pauline" instead of Polly. it would have been challenging to find a distinctive voice for each character.

Overall this was a complex and awful yet beautiful story.

Kate Morton remains a favourite.
