punishing

Starts well in story form but soon descends into a painfull barrage of 1980s text book like random numbers, dates, names and factoids each starting with 'Did you know?!'.... well no actually, that's why I'm listening.
The story part doesn't even make it as far as the English invasion.

Nah

This could have been wonderful but I gave up before I got halfway. The problem is that it is so awfully disjointed. The episode about Cook was the one I was really interested in but they went through it like a history book. Date ... this happens, next date, this happened. Tell me a story, for goodness sake - don't read headings when it is an Audible book. I am disappointed. Even more so because I've loved these kind of Audible specials so far. This one is under par.

Famous men of history, mostly

If you like your history pre-chewed, this one's for you. No surprises, non-controversial and easy-listening stories from the past. Personally, I listed these before bed as they're not too long. Quite a few of these are incredibly repetative, but that could be a useful learning tool for some. I have studied and read history enough to wish they would dig a bit deeper on the subjects discussed, but hey I can't really complain as I'm happily listening on regardless. And I do wish they would have included at least some women in here. Cliché, I know, but it's what I was left missing.

Interesting topics

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

yes, if you wanted a brief interpretation of historic events. If you are after a more substantial, in depth program, look elsewhere.

Which character – as performed by the narrator – was your favourite?

good narration

Any additional comments?

I wish the episodes where longer & more in-depth.

bland narration

I thought this lacked a real zing for the mini stories.
the narration was so robotic and bland I felt like turning it off.
I only stuck with it because the actual content was quiet good.

well read

Sadly not as interesting as one had hoped. The narrator was lovely and clear to listen to though.

Very general stories instead of revealing historie

Poor stories... I expected some insights but got none. These are for people who know nothing at all about history.

Nice bitesized information.

Non-linear timeline.

Lots of information. Sometimes repetitive. Why say his third voyage, then that he had already done two voyages though? My tutor would have ripped me to shreds for that.

Something New

Anyone that is interested in History is usually interested in a specific time, place, event, character(s) and subject(s). I personally study the Napoleonic Wars, The age of Sail 1400 to 1890 and Science 1500 to 1960. It is refreshing that something like History Revealed is presented to us all in a short, concise and to the point format. It is a taster for all listeners, covering a diverse subject matter that may light a new spark of interest in a moment in History or a Character that was important in it, that the listener may never have had considered before. It does not pretend to be anything else. It is very well done, short and sweet a bit like the QI books, if you find the facts interesting then you are free to delve into the subject further, if not you are free to move on.

Interesting historical titbits

While being a touch on the politically correct side, in general there’s some good overviews of some of history’s “ great” events, often sprinkled with the odd gem of a fact . The reading of these is a little wooden on some but overall well worth a listen

A good thing that it's free

It's got to be possible to talk about Captain Cooke for half an hour without saying everything twice! Many of the episodes could have been half as long and said more.
I didn't really think it was possible to enunciate too much until I heard this reader. Add that he reads with an urgency better suited to battles or climax of thrillers, and the sometimes shrill voice, it get a bit tiresome.
I actually returned a book he read, as I felt my ears were about to bleed listening to it.
