Very depressing, but that didn’t stop me.
History is all you left me (HIAYLM) is a wonderful book. Every chapter was filled with twists and turns, some that could be predicted, others not.
I found this book emotionally depressing for the most part, as I really liked the storyline of Griffin and Theo, and found that I could only listen for a few chapters at a time before I would start crying or just be overcome with grief.
However, I pushed through, and I am glad I did because the actual story between Griffin and Theo + the supporting characters was great. HIAYLM shows how individuals can set aside their differences when someone close to them passes away, and the emotions that attach itself to a person.
Overall, I believe that this is an amazing book, and listeners should read this but just make sure you are 1st in the right headspace (reach out to family/friends if it raises anything that should be spoken about to support networks) & 2nd have a lot of time to listen this, so you can take breaks between chapters when it becomes too much.

LOVED IT
I decided to pick up History is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera after reading a heap of reviews from other book bloggers that I follow. I am going to say that I am so glad that I did.
From the get go, I was hooked in the story and wanted to find out more. I will admit that I did find this book a bit depressing, but in a good way (as odd as that sounds!) I was needing to know what happened to Theo and what Jackson was hiding.
I really loved the writing style of this one. As I was getting the current happenings, the next chapter would be 'history' and I would discover what had happened in the past. In this way there were almost two stories, but they met in the middle and it all made sense at the end.
Character-wise, I adored Griffin. He was a boy who was battling with compulsions and his love for Theo even though Theo was with someone else. I really related to him throughout most of the story. I also didn't find myself getting frustrated with characters in this book, which I really enjoyed.
Tom Picasso, who narrated History is All You Left Me did an amazing job. His voice was easy to listen to, and changed well with all the different characters. I enjoyed listening to him tell Griffin's story!
I am really excited to read more books by Adam Silvera, as this was my first one!

It Hurts. So You'll Like It.
This is one of those books that is beautiful in a painful sort of way. I would definitely reread this, as it approaches grief in a way that feels so honest, and some of the perspectives are refreshingly different from other YA Contemporary stories centered around grief and loss.
The writing is excellent, and I adore the characters. There was even something that took me by surprise, because I was so buried in the story that I didn't even bother making predictions or assumptions while I read. I was just completely along for the ride on this, and I think that was the right way to experience it. Because, after all, grief itself is rather unpredictable.

this book... this book tore my heart out and I kind of want it back. the story was amazing, heart breaking and, over all just a great time. I've always loved books that can make me really feel something and this book did that. and the narrator did a good job of capturing the pain griffin was going through. I swear, sometimes it felt like he was actually crying in the booth. I highly recommend this to anyone and everyone

A Beautiful Narrative of Young Love and Real Loss
Would you consider the audio edition of History Is All You Left Me to be better than the print version?
Silvera's novel is a very beautiful exploration of first love and loss--death, in fact. The relationship between Griffin and Theo is authentic and heartfelt and the tenderness of their dynamic resonates in the pain that Griffin feels as he processes his grief over Theo's death. This novel had me smiling, sneering, chuckling, and frowning. I cared about these characters--I sincerely wanted Griffin to find happiness again.
The novel's third act does struggle a bit: some events unfold that are not only unprecedented, but a little difficult to buy. That being said, 'History Is All You Left Me' concludes well and leaves a lot on which to reflect. The novel is poignant, insightful, raw, and, most importantly, enjoyable. I find myself quickly becoming a Silvera fan, and I look forward to the release of his next book, 'They Both Die at the End.'
What about Tom Picasso’s performance did you like?
While he does sound a little young, Picasso did a great job of conveying a sense of innocence and vulnerability through Griffin's narration. He took about a chapter to grow on me, but thereafter, I enjoyed the performance.

Surprisingly, it turned out to be a good read.
I'm not going to lie...
when I first purchased this book, I thought I had wasted a credit. I had the mentality of "I will finish this no matter what!"
The more I listened, the more I appreciated what I read. This book focuses on a a boy who is grieving the loss of his first love. It switches between two timelines. The timeline where Theo is dead, and the timeline where he's alive and you get to see the dynamic between griff and the group. There are quite a few twist that I was not expecting. It's a great read. By the end of the book, you'll grow to care for the characters, all of them.

The emotional read makes a good book, even better!
One of my favourite titles as it is, HISTORY IS ALL YOU LEFT ME, just gets better with the Audible read, by Tom Picasso. The emotion is subtle and 'glum', adding to Griff's turmoil and grief at Theo's death.
A very brilliant read.

One of the best
The quality of writing and the superb narration with exactly the right level of characterisation makes this one of my favourite Audibles so far. The story draws you in from the start helped greatly by Tom Picasso's sympathetic and wholly character immersed narration. The depth of each character is revealed throughout the story. It's an emotional journey from the start and easy to shed more than a few tears as it's impossible not to empathise with Griffin Jackson Wade and Theo throughout the passages of history and present time. By the end of the book I feel I know all 4 characters personally and that makes the story even more emotional.
Im on my second listen. Its one of the best books of its genre and of its time.

A beautiful but heartwrenching story
I downloaded this audiobook on a bit of a whim, but I am so glad I did. The story was lovely: of first loves, the complications of young love & finding your way through tragedy.
I found it particularly clever how teenage characters presented very adult feelings and reactions, but in a totally believable way. But the most impressive part of the writing was the switch between history & the present day. This was so well done that every time you returned to the present, you felt the gut-wrench that a principle character was dead (not a spoiler!), so, as a reader, you were walking the same journey as the narrating character.
Occasionally I felt the language was a little over dramatic, hence my 4 stars instead of 5, but this was few and far between. I've given 4 stars for the narrating only because there was moments where the narrator sometimes became much louder or more pronounced, which pulled you from a moment. But otherwise, Tom Picasso handled the narrating with aplomb.
Overall a great book - I often became so absorbed I nearly missed my bus stop!

My first Adam Silvera.....
I'm giving 5 stars for the story and 4 stars for the narration cos the quality wasn't that good at times, very muffled, although I did like the narrator. There were tears, laughter [the scene with the condoms, Grif's dad and the awkward silences/embarrassment for all concerned in the shop made me hoot] AND I loved the fact that the author didn't give us a whitewashed version of the YA aspect of the story, and try to pretend that the boys weren't having sex when you knew damn well that they were [although not on page]. Both boys had faults and made mistakes....My first Adam Silvera - of course he ripped my heart out and then put it back together again very slowly. They Both Die at the End will be up shortly, again on audio and I can't wait for What If It's Us in October.

A lovely story about loss
A story about love and trust and responsibilities that come with it. The character's dealing with loss is well written and believable. A lovely story.

Second only to Adam Silvera's "They Both Die At The End". Utterly brilliant book
What was one of the most memorable moments of History Is All You Left Me?
The sudden realisation that it is possible to place blame upon oneself unknowingly
What does Tom Picasso bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
A human touch. Listening to someone read a story is the most wonderful experience. Tom has a wonderful narrating voice
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Destroyed me emotionally at points. made me feel happy at others. Adam is a genius with emotional dialogue
