Mendel Singer führt im Schtetl Zuchnow in Ostgalizien ein bescheidenes Dasein als Lehrer, bis ihn die Schicksalsschläge treffen: Der älteste Sohn muss und will zum russischen Militär, der zweite desertiert nach Amerika, die einzige Tochter lässt sich mit Kosaken ein und der jüngste Sohn scheint unheilbar behindert. Mendel Singer und seine Frau Deborah übersiedeln mit ihrer Tochter nach Amerika. Sie lassen ihren jüngsten Sohn zurück, da dieser aufgrund seiner Krankheit reiseunfähig ist. In Amerika führen sie zusammen mit ihrem zweitältesten Sohn ein geruhsames Leben. Doch wieder schlägt das Schicksal zu. Beide Söhne fallen im II. Weltkrieg, die Mutter zerbricht daran und stirbt und die Tochter endet im Wahnsinn.
Am Ende des Lebens, als auch Mendel Singer zu verzweifeln droht und er sich von Gott abwendet, geschieht ein Wunder. Aus dem jüngsten, behinderten Sohn ist ein begnadeter Komponist und Dirigent geworden, der nun seinen Vater zu sich nimmt. Daraufhin beginnt Mendel Singer wieder an Gott zu glauben.
