Erzählt wird der Leidensweg des armen Dorfschullehrers Mendel Singer aus einem jüdischen Schtetl in Russland um 1900. Wie der biblische Hiob wird auch Mendel innerhalb kürzester Zeit von Schicksalsschlägen getroffen, so dass sein Glauben zerbricht: Der jüngste Sohn Menuchim kommt behindert zur Welt, ein älterer Sohn muss zum Militär, der dritte wandert nach Amerika aus, die Tochter lässt sich mit Kosaken ein. Schließlich siedelt Mendel zu seinem Sohn nach Amerika über, lässt aber den behinderten Menuchim zurück. Erst am Ende seines Lebens, nach der wundersamen Wiedervereinigung mit seinem totgeglaubten Sohn, findet Mendel zurück zu seinem Glauben.
