About this listen

When Mahony returns to Mulderrig, a speck of a place on Ireland's west coast, he brings only his handsome face, a photograph of his long-lost mother and a determination to do battle with the village's lies.

Mahony also somehow wakes the dead from their graves, with their foggy memories and hidden stories floating greyly amongst the unseeing living. No one, though - living or dead - will be able to guess what happened to the teenage mother who abandoned him as a baby.

"It’s utterly original and deeply enjoyable. It smacks you in the face from the first page and for the rest of the novel strokes your cheek." ( Canongate)

Jess Kidd tells a haunting story with the wonderful voice of Aidan Kelly. They paint a picture of question that keeps you easily listening to the end.

Jess Kidd’s ability to place you right in the middle of the action, as if you your actually there is akin to Ray Bradbury.

Well worth a listen and to all if Jess’s books.

Jess Kidd tell a haunting story you just can’t stop listening to.

I loved the writing, but to be honest it didn't have a lot of suspense. And maybe it wasn't good for audio as there were s o many characters to keep up with. But, so glad I did listen to it. refreshing.

quirky. brilliantly written. fabulous characters.

This story is just crying out to be made into a series, the characters are really quirky, and the way the living and the dead interact is both hilarious and poignant. The central character returns to the village where his mother gave birth to him, trying to find her and discovering that a mystery surrounds her disappearance. I loved it.

Quirky and engaging

Jess Kidd at her best. Deeply sad, memorably bleak and horrific and somehow still wickedly funny.

Harrowing, brilliant and funny.
