Publisher's Summary

We’ve all heard of fake news, but what about fake history?

Dominic Sandbrook explores two and a half millennia of human history, traveling from the American Deep South to the air raid shelters of wartime Britain, to discover how the past has constantly been manipulated, rewritten and reshaped.

It turns out that when it comes to history, separating fact from fiction isn’t always easy. Many of the widely held beliefs about our past are based on a web of lies.

Prepare for bias

If you feel that socialism, Marxism, dirty hippies, lefties, and anything left-of-centre, are threatening your lifestyle, and you are looking to confirm your beliefs - then I can highly recommend this podcast to you.
Prepare for some heavily curated truths and overuse of unqualified and unverified opinions and statements to question the veracity of others. No questions asked, no explanations needed.
I commend the producers for only selecting topics that fit the narrative and finding all kinds of obscure experts to confirm their long held suspicions that left is bad and conservatism is and always has been beyond reproach all throughout history.

a little uncontroversial but passes the time

the first thing i have seen from this author so came into it with an open mind, but for what is supposed to be a discussion of how politics perverts history and truth, the author can't seem to help himself from putting his own rightwing bias into it.

performance is good, a little slow for me, but that's just taste.

Not exactly subjective.

The story telling is rather objective, only people who agree or support the narrators story are interviewed. I found most of the stories uninteresting and wasn't a huge fan of the narrator.

Not a Fan

Not a fan of revisionist history looking back on what was with a modern set of rights and wrongs. The authors don’t seem to realise that while they criticise the writers of as it happened history writing from one perspective they are doing exactly the same thing.

Just my cup of tea!

This audio book was very satisfying. The content and writing were well-researched, and well-narrated. I particularly appreciated the added clarifications or updates with regards to current events (COVID 19, Black Lives Matter). This resulted in great historical documentation, linked to the realities we are living through now - the best sort of writing in my opinion.

this was revisionism

slavery was not the sole reason for the cival war, as a matter of fact, it was one of the lesser reasons. The main reason for the was was the north cutting off southern supply lines and attempting to starve the south in the hopes of making the south fall in line. This episode was pure revisionism, and as such the creators of this podcast should not be trusted to tell the truth on any subject. For shame.

Informative and balanced

I have been hooked on listening to podcasts but what is more and more annoying is they drag out the detail. This audio book is not like a book more like a really well edited podcast with no wasted words, knowledgeable contributors and Dominic Sandbrook gets to the essence of the story he is telling and makes it compelling listening. I just wished there was more of it!

Recommended

Incredibly relevant to today's discussions on race, nationality and identity. It's too simple to say that history is written by the victors. This series looks at the interpretations as much as the sources of what is taken at face value as "historical facts ".

Non arrival in my Library... try again Audible...

I am the same as Jacqueline. I would like to review this but it won’t let me listen even though you say it’s in my library.
When you rearranged the Library you upset the apple cart as far as I am concerned. Half of the books I have purchased are not in it. Well done, Audible. You will lose customers.

Gripping history

Incredibly absorbing. Dominick Sandbrook takes us from Soviet Russia to the English Civil War to the Blitz, separating the truths from the lies. Beautifully produced, it is a gripping listen. So many fascinating facts that I listened to the whole thing in one sitting and plan to re - listen again. An outstanding historical podcast - stunningly presented AND an easy listen. Tip top.

OK but not great

OK I've been spoilt by the quality of Audible free offerings lately so my expectations are probably too high, but this didn't quite meet the mark. It was OK. It was informative. It was presented well. It just wasn't something I'm going to recommend or chat to my friends about. Just lacking something I can't quite put my finger on.

Overall giod

Found it puzzling that before the chapter regarding the American Civil War the narrator felt the need to clarify it was recorded before recent events and that's why there was no mention of it.
It was also ruined slightly by hearing about the vile Jeremy Corbyn in another chaptet

Wonderfully produced and written short snippets of history exposing history myths vs truths and real accounts. A really good listen.
