Story
Alex Verus is a mage who can see the future, but even he couldn't have seen this day coming. Alex has agreed to join the Keepers, the magical police force, to protect his friends from his old master, the Dark mage Richard Drakh. Going legit was always going to be difficult for an outcast like Alex, and there are those in the Keepers who aren't keen to see an ex-Dark mage succeed. Especially when Dark mages are making a play for a seat on the council for the first time in history.

Story
Life is quiet for Alex Verus. Amazing. With a flat full of friends (and the occasional fish) and business booming, why not enjoy the humdrum here and now? But of course that's too good to be true. In a sudden and cruel pincer movement of fate, Alex finds himself fighting a sinister and powerful gang as well as his own demons - for the same crime. Held hostage by the choices of his past, Alex's future is now in jeopardy....

Story
Alex Verus has a magic shop in Camden, London, and an uncanny ability to see the future. But suddenly everyone can see Alex's future. Because the Mage's Council of Great Britain just named him a traitor and ordered his death in seven days' time, and there's no way anyone can get out of that. Alex's friends - Luna and the other apprentices he's taken in - are tainted by association. They'll be marked for death, too, when the ruling comes into play, and Alex becomes locked in a race against time to save them.

Welcome to Fountain Reach. Ancient seat of the Aubuchon dynasty. Majestic setting of the White Stone tournament. Alex Verus' (not necessarily reliable) reputation attracts all sorts. Rotherweird is a twisted, arcane murder-mystery with shades of Deborah Harkness, Hope Mirrlees and Ben Aaronovitch, Mervyn Peake and Edward Gorey at their disturbing best. The town of Rotherweird stands alone - there are no guidebooks, despite the fascinating and diverse architectural styles cramming the narrow streets, the avant-garde science and offbeat customs. Cast adrift from the rest of England by Elizabeth I, Rotherweird's independence is subject to one disturbing condition: nobody, but nobody, studies the town or its history.

Series starts off as good and ends up great.
I've done a couple of reviews for books in this series recently and have said nearly everything there is to say without giving away spoilers. The plot was great, the narration keeps improving and I was pulled in from start to finish. Despite the fact that the main hero is male, there are several really strong and varied females in the cast, which makes this an equally good listen regardless if you are male or female. This review is really just to confirm that it keeps getting better and there isn't a weak or filler book in it so far. I ended up listening to the books back to back, despite the fact that I've other purchases I should be listening to first. The next book is due in August and I will definitely be pre-ordering this if it come to Audible UK.
You do need to listen in order as while each book has it's own story there are new characters introduced and an overarching plot. Since Audible now has the lot but hasn't series linked them yet, this is: Fated, Cursed, Taken, Chosen and Hidden.

When hints become facts
What did you like most about Hidden?
Quite a few facts about characters that have been only hinted at in previous novels get an explanation. And the explanations are as riveting as the action scenes!
What did you like best about this story?
Although the story is globally very well thought out, it's the small details that flesh it out that I like the most.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
A certain allusion to the Babylon 5 universe... Funny as hell!
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
As always, the story builds up in a way that enables the reader to empathize more and more with the characters.
Any additional comments?
The whole series has become 'mature'. The characters are well rounded and very human (i.e. flawed), except maybe for a certain reddish animal.

Chapter Nine
If you’ve got to this book, you are both addicted and excited by Alex’s development. When you get to chapter 9, learn even more about him. And this is where you decide how much you actually like him... Lots are covered in this book (lots of fun in jokes - Babylon 5 and The Pink Panther)! This is a deep story and I must say that I did get tired of Ann. However, these stories are getting better with each episode. Worth pressing through on...

My favourite of the series !
I absolutely loved this book ! for me, the other 4 had been building the story and this gave some of the answers you have wondered; about Richard and Alex's background. I don't want to give any spoilers so I wont say much more, but it felt like a Chapter in Alex life was coming to an end - but another door is opening and we have a long way to go, more of Alex,.... and his friends ! - don't want to say too much much about who and spoil it ! I hope in the next one we learn a bit more about Arexxia and Luna, *not sure of the spelling of Spiders name* Love this series !! All of the books are great, what are you waiting for, get listening !

Excellent as always!
Splendid story, developing a much-needed arc, only previously hinted at, or skated over, as those stories sped along. The best series I have come across in some time, and as I’ve said, it’s begging for a Netflix adaptation! Now on to the next one - lead on, Gildart, me old son, lead on! Five out of five stars (more, if only they allowed it!) ;)

The best in the series so far!
Really enjoyed this book - the characters developed and there was much new. I was so into, I immediately read the next book in the series, Veiled, but it rather disappointed me. Not enough to stop me from reading more in this excellent series. I've been reading the Harry Dresden books which as is much mentioned in reviews this series is similar to - for me Jacka writes with more flair and better characterisation. In particular I enjoy that London is such a strong backdrop.
