About this listen

A world abandoned by the gods, mystifying cosmic forces, unimaginable power for those willing to ascend, and a hero who would rather . . . go fishing???

When summoned to a fantastical world and granted powers by a broken System, most freshly minted protagonists would strap on their big-boy boots and get ready for their stats to start climbing. But Fischer isn't like most MCs. In fact, he doesn't want to be a hero at all.

Fame? Fortune? Power? He had enough of all that in his old life. Discovering forbidden fishing techniques and petting every cute animal that comes within scritching distance? Now that's a good time.

Unfortunately for Fischer, cosmic forces rarely care for mortal feelings. He's hounded on all sides by inept cults, conspiring nobles, and more magical misunderstandings than those of a preteen relationship. Even his dutiful pet crab is firing energy blades like an anime antagonist.

So grab your fishing rod and a good snack, and pet your dog for me. The catch of a lifetime awaits!

Critic Reviews

“I can’t think of a single story I’d rather get truck-kun’d (truck-kunned?) into than [that of] the vivid, lush world portrayed in Heretical Fishing, especially if I can hang out with Fischer and his gang. . . . The best book I’ve read this year.” —Matt Dinniman, author of Dungeon Crawler Carl

I'm piggy backing on another review about it being refreshing because I think it is the best way to describe this book! I found myself laughing and giggling more times than I can remember and use of everyday aussie slang was done to perfection! really really enjoyed this book and I'm absolutely stoked to start the next! Heath Miller did an amazing job with the narration also, I feel like he captured the characters personalities perfectly!

Such a refreshing story!

I don't like fishing. I have absolutely no interest in it. I barely even eat seafood! This was fracking amazing though. Cozy, funny, crazy shenanigans going on all over. Just fantastic 👏

Unexpectedly Fantastic

I started listening by accident after finishing another book. It "hooked" me immediately and I didn't stop listening until I had finished it. Helped me stay positive through the birth of my first child, Brilliant. I love it.

I really enjoyed Heretical Fishing - it’s nothing particularly original in the LitRPG genre but the story is easy to follow, most of the characters are fun and I want to see how this whole thing plays out. The narration is really good and I enjoy the narration by Heath Miller a lot - I’ll definitely be checking out some of his other performances.

The first minor thing that bothers me is there’s no real problem that the protagonist is facing. His motivation is to make friends and fish, which he does. There’s nothing preventing him reaching his goal and nothing to put obstacles in the way. Everything works out. Sooo it’s just a journal entry of a guy enjoying his life. It’s funny and interesting enough to keep me going though.

The other parts are what makes me only rate the story 3*. There’s this completely pointless romance that has been written in between Fisher and Maria and it sucks. It doesn’t add anything to the story and is poorly written. I found myself getting angry every time there was a chapter with just Fisher and Maria. It’s like the author thought there should be a romance because other books do it and kind of shoehorned it in. Added to this is that the scenes with them are terribly written and made me realise the majority of the women in this book are terribly written - they come off very two dimensional and based off outdated stereotypes. They contribute nothing to the story other than being background NPCs.

Overall, I enjoyed it and I’ll likely end up listening to the next one because I want to see the power progression and how many different animals Fisher collects. But I really hope the author has learned how to create and write an actual woman as a useful and well-rounded character in the book.

Fun story with some annoying writing
