Før Magnes mormor døde, lagde hun alt til rette, så 16-årige Magne kunne overtage og videreføre hendes hemmelige arbejde som heks og kustode i Tangea, et reservat for truede magiske folkefærd. Der var bare lige én ting, hun undlod: at fortælle Magne noget som helst om sit arbejde eller sine planer. Så da to ældre damer dukker op for at hente Magne natten efter mormorens begravelse, tror han først, at de er tossede.
