About this listen

A decade ago, teacher Nathan Brookes saw four of his students walk up a hill and vanish. Only one returned, Olivia, starved, terrified, and with no memory of where she’d been. Questioned by the police but released for lack of evidence, Nathan spent the years trying to forget.

When a body is found in the same ancient woodland where they disappeared, it is first believed to be one of the missing children but is soon identified as a Bronze Age warrior, nothing more than an archaeological curiosity. Yet Nathan starts to have horrific visions of the students, alive but trapped. Then Olivia reappears, desperate that the warrior’s body be returned to the earth - for he is the only thing keeping a terrible evil at bay.

The book is fabulously compelling, a huge story with brave and beautiful and occasionally absurd characters. Davies' dry and nuanced narration makes this a completely immersive experience with the perfect amount of resigned humour and 'what the fuck' factor.

A Thoroughly British Fantasy Thriller

Interesting idea, but bit of a disjointed story. I found I didn’t really care at all about the fate of any character. It was amusing that some of the female characters were voiced so they sounded like Baldrick, though.

Not for me

The take on the story is incredibly interesting, the British version of standing stones. I had sadness for the characters but the ending was satisfying. Knocked a star off as at times its tricky to get past some of the voices and pronunciations even up to the end of the book when you normally sink into a rhythm of things. I would not count this as a horror novel, maybe a fantasy thriller more than anything.

Not at all what I was expecting. What I thought was going to be a crime thriller turned into a fantastical time/inter dimensional travel story. It wasn't very 'horror' or even scary, but it was interesting enough that it made me want to know what was happening and going to happen.

Odd But Interesting
