About this listen

Hidden by London’s wealth, energy and need for cheap labour, the city’s immigrant population is powerless, despised and often illegal. So when a young woman’s body is discovered on Hampstead Heath one cold morning, she could be anyone...Rich or poor, outsider or insider, five strangers are connected in undreamed-of ways as greed, courage, murder and kindness link their lives. Polly Noble, a human rights lawyer and single mother, knows more than most how easily people fall into the abyss of London’s underworld.

This my second Amanda Craig novel. I found it moving and utterly absorbing. I too lived in London part of that time - a South African/Zimbabwean trying to fit in. Craig captures the lives of quiet desperation of so many immigrants to the UK but in a way that shines a light on their dignity and courage.
The performance was excellent bar the South African accents. It is, however, one of the most difficult to get right, with most narrators giving every South African character the same grating accent.

Outstanding portrayal of London at the turn of the 21st century

It was hard to rate this story as I was shocked by the unexpected graphic rape of a minor, I myself have a 15 yr old daughter & found it quite confronting-it’s not for bedtime listening !however this is a gripping story with plenty of great characters that Sian portrays so well. Not for the faint hearted, depressing at times.

Sex trafficking & prostitution with minors
