‘A cleverly plotted, YA historical novel with a strong, likeable protagonist to root for. A FINALIST and highly recommended!’ - The Wishing Shelf Book Awards
The political machinations and power plays have increased in this book so the tension and suspense have been ramped up. It's all Aliwyn's POV this time and that's part of what makes this series a stand out for me - the protagonist is a young girl, practically alone in the world, with very few resources and people she can trust. It really switches the perception of events that we are privy to, to something unique and fresh.
I liked how spirited the characters all were. Whether it's their natural grit or the resilience forced upon them by the extreme circumstances and harsh time they live in, no-one ever gave up. While very few had impressive martial skills, every struggle was committed to until an outcome became achievable, short or long term. The author skillfully crafted these characters to be wholly three dimensional, capable of responding appropriately regarding age and situation, and that depth added complexity and believability.
The thing that stood out for me was the message that life is always shades of grey, underlining how hard it is to judge someone impartially. There was character growth in several individuals as they struggled with this, which I appreciated. Listening to Aliwyn as she vacillated between opinions made her a very empathetic character and exposed the care Ms Wang had put into crafting her on the page.
This really is a superb series and one I am fully enjoying.
