Whilst McCullough's book - published at the same time was hailed as a masterpiece - which it is for its easy style and readability. Ferrell's book is of similar dimensions but able to deconstruct the Truman years with a greater precision and lacking McCullough's hagiographic tone.

Now we are also blessed with David Roll's Ascent to Power which focuses on the transition from Roosevelt and Truman finding his way during his first term as president. My next read will be Harry Truman's Excellent Adventure describing the 2,500 mile road trip he and Bess took after his retirement.
