Story
Sarah Hussain was not popular in the community of Kingsmarkham. She was born of mixed parents - a white Irishwoman and an immigrant Indian Hindu. She was also the Reverend of St Peter's church. But it came as a profound shock to everyone when she was found strangled in the vicarage. A garrulous cleaner, Maxine, also shared by the Wexfords, discovers the body. In his retirement, the former Detective Chief Inspector is devoting much time to reading, and has little patience with Maxine's prattle.

Good but not her best...
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. It's worth a listen. But I was disappointed that it dealt with such a serious subject like domestic violence in such a predictable, slightly old-fashioned way. The victims were all women, the aggressors all male. Would have made it more interesting to have had just one case where the genders were reversed...
What about Nigel Anthony’s performance did you like?
Well-paced.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
In a similar ilk to other Wexford novels.
Any additional comments?
I enjoyed Regs dilemma over his relationship with his two daughters and him coming to terms with finding one much harder to get on with than the other

Really glitchy audiobook
This was a good, solid if not slow story. The narration was good (Wexford’s voice was spot on from the TV version) and the characters felt real, although there were many to hold on to and I got confused at times. However, the recording itself is terrible. There are gaps, repeated sentences, a whole portion of the book which skips forward like a CD and parts that begin mid sentence. The chapters bear no relation the assigned chapter points so it’s hard to navigate if you need to go back. Really awful editing together - needs re doing!

Best ever Wexford
I’ve started listening to the Wexford books - back to front for some reason! This has been, so far my favourite. They have all been so good, but Rendell has really struck a chord with this one.
