Summary

One mistake: Victor got into the wrong car. One decision: Oliver didn't kick him out. One lie: neither of them knows who the other person is—at least, not until it's too late to turn back.

There are many words for what Oliver does for a living, and none of them are very kind. Oliver's time in that industry is nearly at an end, so when a gorgeous older man with sad eyes stumbles into his path, Oliver finds it impossible to turn him away.

Victor looks at him like he's an angel, even when Oliver feels like a devil, but he knows better than to hope. After all, men like them are only ever destined for star-crossed love.

As months of separation carry on, Oliver realizes that maybe he really is willing to fight for what he wants and, more importantly, for who.

Halo is a standalone novel featuring an age gap romance, the best hot wings known to man, the merits of good gas station burritos, aquarium dates, meteor showers, lava lamp mood lighting, kissing hands, and the most hard-won happily ever after you may ever hear.

Love is love irrespective of what challenges they face, even if they have physical challenges.

The celebration of challenging topics

Victor inherited his money and family business but life hasn’t been easy. He has cerebral palsy, which he has made peace with, but he can’t make peace with the fact he’s just found his fiancé in bed with his best friend and business partner. Numb and hurting, Victor cancels the wedding but decides to go on the honeymoon alone. His first bit of luck is mistaking Oliver, an escort, for his Uber driver. Victor is charmed by Oliver and they spend a very happy week together but both men know that they must face the real world again soon.

This warmhearted but melancholic hurt / comfort romance has parallels with the excellent Honeymoon for One by Keira Andrews—I enjoyed them both a lot. Both Victor and Oliver have faced adversity, but neither has succumbed to bitterness or self-pity. I love EM Lindsey’s focus on main characters with disabilities—she is respectful and informative, and I always learn a lot about the challenges other people face. There’s some satisfying spice with age-gap, sex-work, and rich-poor tropes. There’s medium relationship angst: Victor needs time to come to terms with the betrayal while Oliver is pretty convinced that any longterm relationship with Victor would not be realistic. I thought the ending was appropriate and hard-won, and I’ll definitely seek out more in this series. 🎧 Voice actor Iggy Toma is always excellent, but he’s especially suited to slightly sad and emotional stories like this—he channels the heartwarming vibes so well!

Two gentle, caring guys find each other—beautiful!
