Eine arme Holzfällerfamilie lebt im Wald. Als die Not besonders groß wird und es kaum noch etwas zu essen gibt, überredet die Mutter den Vater, ihre beiden Kinder, Hänsel und Gretel, ohne Vorwarnung im Wald auszusetzen. Doch Hänsel belauscht seine Eltern. Als der Tag gekommen ist und der Vater sie zurücklässt, legt er eine Spur aus Brotkrumen, um zusammen mit seiner Schwester den Weg zurückzufinden. Unglücklicherweise werden diese jedoch von den Vögeln aufgepickt und so verlaufen sich Hänsel und Gretel. Einsam und halb verhungert finden sie nach ein paar Tagen ein Häuschen ganz aus Zucker und Kuchen. Dankbar essen sie sich satt, ohne zu ahnen, wessen Haus sie gerade anknabbern...
