Publisher's Summary

The thrilling short-story collection featuring Jeff VanderMeer, Karen Traviss, and Eric Nylund - part of the expanded universe based on the New York Times best-selling video game series Halo!

When humanity expanded beyond the safety of Earth to new stars and horizons, it never dreamed what dangers would be encounter there. When the theocratic alien juggernaut known as the Covenant declared war upon the fragile human empire, millions of lives were lost - but millions of heroes also rose to the challenge. In such a far-reaching conflict, not many tales of the brave have a chance to become legend.

This collection of 11 stories dives into the depths of the vast Halo universe, not only from the perspective of those who fought and died to save humanity, but also from those who vowed to wipe it out of existence.

Halo Fanboy

As a life long Halo fan I found the "tales" refreshing and exciting. I will be revisiting this book in the future for a second pass. have already recommended it to many and they have nothing but great things to say about it.

Some stories are amazing, others are not good

Unfortunately, some stories are phenomenal and essential for Halo lore. Others are lackluster at best. I would say about 50/50 split. That said the ones that are phenomenal make this more than worth buying.

voice actors

I really enjoyed that they had the voice actors of the master chief and Cortana for each of their respective stories

some audio issues but a good collection of stories

a couple stories had some skipping or cutting out but other wise was good. i enjoyed the listening of a book that would of taken me a year to finish. what was suppose to be a brake from the main halo books was turned into an amazing following of some characters and stories i will never forget.

Stunning

To read this book as I have many times is one thing, but to listen to it is truly something else. I cannot praise the narrators and sound effects enough. Best halo audiobook I've listened to yet. On to the next one!

Best narrator, superb storytelling.

Every story was deeply interesting. Favorites were Dirt, the Mona Lisa, and Preston J. Cole.

poor story telling

the book is fine, although it does jump here and there. the audio reader miss pronounces alot of words as well as monotone that killed this book.

Great stories. Some authors better than others.

Many of the stories use incorrect terminology for military terms. People in the unsc would be part of the navy and therefore not called soldiers, but seamen. Additionally no gun in the unsc uses “clips” they are magazines. Voice actors occasionally mispronounce words which takes you out of universe. Great stories though.

Great stories but narration could use some work

Most of the stories in this collection are a great listen. I especially enjoyed "Midnight in the Heart of Midlothian" and "The Impossible Life and Possible Death of Preston J. Cole". "The Mona Lisa" was also really good. Didn't really like "Stomping on the Heels of a Fuss" until I listened to the audio series "Hunt the Truth", which gives some context to the character of Dasc Gevadim. Which brings me onto the narration. Fresh off Hunt the Truth, it's possible I've been spoiled, because that series has some of the best voice acting I've ever heard. Most of these stories are narrated passably but there are quite a few instances of mispronounced words, or tone changes where the narrator ends one day and picks up the next. Had more thought and care been given to the narration, I probably would have given this 5 stars.
