Publisher's Summary

Are you ready for self-transformation? Many spiritual teachers promise transformation, but Georges Ivanovitch Gurdjieff delivers.

Gurdjieff (1872-1949) was born in Alexandropol on the border of Russia and Turkey. Gurdjieff's teachings contain many concepts that, taken together, are referred to as the Work. The idea behind the Work is that our first birth is our physical body, which is all we need to get through life. But we are capable of developing into something higher; just as an acorn can stay an acorn and die or develop into an oak tree, we can develop into something higher. Gurdjieff offers a radically original vision of man and his potential for self-development.

Gurdjieff, A Beginner's Guide: How Changing the Way We React to Misplacing Our Keys Can Transform Our Lives is a beginning guide to the teachings of Gurdjieff. Practical and eminently easy to listen to, it leads the listener through some of the main concepts necessary for self-transformation.

Did not find insightful

Would you try another book from Gil Friedman and/or Kevin Pierce?

No

What do you think your next listen will be?

Not sure

Would you be willing to try another one of Kevin Pierce’s performances?

No

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment

Any additional comments?

If you know nothing about Gurdjieff this might be of interest but only as a general outline. The profound content of Gurdjieff's teaching is not captured in this book and is, in some cases, completely misunderstood in my opinion. That said I did pick up a few good reminders and insights which may have been worth the hours of listening.

A good introduction to the work

It doesn't go to any great length into the real items but I'm very glad I bought and listen to this book.
It brings back to focus the importance of personal development and Gudjieff teachings.

Great for beginners as me !!!!

I am very thankful that this kind of book exists because is an easier way to get a taste of the complexity behind of the esoteric teachings of Gurdjieff. I loved the way that the main teachings of the WORK were delivered and it’s explanations with examples. Also thank you to the author for the final recommendations for those interested in go a little deeper into the WORK.

Thank you Gil Friedman !!! I did enjoyed this book and it’s tremendous value for me !!!!

Great introduction.

I have been familiarized with Gurdjieff after many years of listen and reading Osho’s work.

This book was a great introduction and has compelled me to further investigate the fourth way.

I look forward to more learning practices and experiences of Gurdjieffs’.

a great 1000 foot view of The Work.

I've been studying The Work for a year and still struggled with the concepts and vocabulary. this is a quick overview, very easy to understand. this is a great place to start before diving into the commentaries or any other Work books.

Misunderstood

The author has been gotten his teaching wrong in many parts, in my humble opinion.

An inspiring introduction

I chose this book having come across references to Gurdijeff in a number of books I have read and curiosity got the better of me. Friedman's introduction to the work is well written and easy to digest considering the density of the subject and was just the right balance to prompt me to take the study of "the work" further.

For anyone who is interested in the spiritual aspect of self development but has not found what they are seeking in terms of guidance in mainstream religious settings, this is an interesting route on to the path. This book is just enough to absorb key aspects of the work by way of introduction.

I really enjoyed it and will be returning to it again and again.

Superb

The best summary of the Work I've ever read, highly recommended even if you've already read the likes of Ouspensky, Gurdjieff, Nicoll, Nott etc. Perhaps my only criticism is that it doesn't really 'sell' the Work as a whole. Gurdjieff's notion of the levels of man is covered along with the overarching concept of raising one's level of being, but there is little if any discussion of why anybody would want to do this. This topic is covered at length in the more detailed accounts (e.g. 'In Search of the Miraculous') but perhaps it could have been touched on here too, so that a reader new to the Work doesn't simply ask, 'So what?' and leave it there.

Great introduction to Gurdjieff

Great introduction to Gurdjieff - clear, concise, easily approval, actionable. Not particularly deep, but enough for a long time of inspiration.

Better books available

This is a bit like listening to a student’s essay. The writing seemed very basic to me and obviously just his own interpretation of Gurdjeff’s teachings. The narration is also very mechanical and robotic. I would recommend that anyone interested in awakening reads a book actually written and read by an awakened author such as Eckhart Tolle or Byron Katie. These types of books are of far more value in my opinion.

First exploration of Gurdjieff

Appreciated the honest and transparent interpretation of Gurdjieff's work. Gil goes to great lengths to emphasise the potential limitations in his understanding. I appreciated his illustrations and personsl accounts, really helpful. An excellent book that encourages me to explore more, including the work of Maurice Nicholl. Thanks to the author.

Good introduction to Gurdjieff.

This is a good intro to Gurdjieff's ideas, well presented and clear, the author uses personal anecdotes to bring the ideas up to date. it's a pity there are not more Gurdjieff audio-books!
