L'episodio 2 (Libro I, parte II) è tutto dedicato alla guerra fra la Francia di Napoleone e l'Austria e la Russia. Siamo nel 1805 e le armate si scontrano in Austria, vicino a Vienna, occupata dai francesi. Tutto l'episodio si basa sulle azioni di guerra e sui risvolti psicologici che tutto ciò ha in alcuni dei protagonisti principali: Andrej Bolkonskij e Nikolaj Rostov, che sono sul campo.
