Publisher's Summary

I've won one victory against my enemies, but it seems the barons are just getting started with their new, vicious schemes. They'll stop at nothing to expand their power.

Any move I make to oppose them could have horrible consequences for both me and the guys I love. My only hope is playing along until the right opportunity comes my way.

There's a chance I could sway my mother if I can earn her trust. She may be brutal when she feels she needs to be, but I've seen glimpses of a softer side underneath. Can I walk the line between obedience and resistance without losing so much more than I already have?

Only one more to go

Hopefully you have read all the books in the series up to this point so you will know who everyone is and what is going on. This book starts right about where the last one left off . Rory is still trying to get to know her mother and hopes to be able to change her mind about the students at the Academy flaunting their magic and harassing the Nary students. Unfortunately, things are about to get worse instead of better. The Council has decided to extend the area where magic can be openly used to the whole neighboring town. Not only that, but a magical field keeps the townspeople trapped with no communication to the outside world. How are Rory and the guys going to stop this madness?

Of course there are other things going on. The guys are having their own problems with family. One will be attacked and lose his magic. Several will go to the extreme to protect siblings. It is Rory's mother, though, that will finally go off the deep end.

I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.

Why is this still so good???

This is an ongoing story that just keeps getting more solid, this is the first RH that I've enjoyed for so long, its perfection. Usually I get bored with the premise, but not this time the characters and the story were done so well. This is one of the better volumes though, because I enjoyed the being, middle and ending, which is so rare. The narration is great too, from the male and femle narrators and thats always boss when they fit the story.

The scions keep getter closer and still have a lot of problems to solve

As always, the narrators are great. So lovely that it’s the same narrators for the entire series (8 books total).

Apart from the scions’ actions to stop the sinister plans the barons have set in motion, Rory’s mother seems to be getting back to her full strength after her ordeal.
It’s nice to see that her mother doesn’t only get back to her vicious nature but that she also a softer side as in she has love for her daughter. In this book they are slowly connecting a bit more every now and again, which makes Rory feel guilty for betraying her mother in a way but the barons are taking things too far so she’s caught in the middle. Those few glimpses of another type of woman -one that doesn’t want what the Barons want anymore- are giving Rory hope that she can get through to her mother and at the same time, dividing the current Pentacle of Barons. Her mother does have her ups and downs and needs time adjusting to life again outside her extended prison time. The very understandable lack of trust and those glimpses of a woman/mother/baron in conflict with herself gives extra depth to this character and it’s a great addition to the story.

Of course, this book is more about (all) the scions than Rory’s relationship with her mother, there are lots of nice, steamy or suspenseful moments.
Some of the steamy parts were beyond my limits to be able to enjoy every scene but that’s just personal reference and I still like the story as a whole. It was only two or three moments that were over the top for me personally anyway so considering the rest of the story, stopping was not an option lol. I just skipped through those few too-steamy-for-me bits.

It is nice to see how the scions keep getting closer and closer with each book and I like how they deal with things.
So all in all a great book, it doesn’t matter whether you read it or listen to it, it’s fun either way!

holy cow

Each book just keeps getting better and better. Rory and the guys are coming together and working more as a team and it's making them stronger than ever. The dynamics between them all is just wow.
I read and listened to this book and the narrators do such an amazing job that you can't help but feel like you are a part of the story with them. All I can say is why haven't you read this book yet?

What the damn hell?!?!?!

I normally write these reviews and comment on the storyline etc but this time "Eva, what the hell did you do to those poor characters?!?!?!" is the best I can manage. The wider world storyline blows wide open, every single one of the pentacle has a major confrontation in some way or another - I mean, what she (the author) did to Malcolm was just plain cruel!

I can't wait for the final installment - I have no idea how this is going to play out!
