Summary

A new romantasy novel written from the perspective of Grim, from #1 New York Times-bestselling author and #BookTok sensation Alex Aster

True love knows no bounds.

This novel—told from Grim’s perspective—gives listeners insight into his past: the motivations and events that cemented his fate as Isla’s eventual love interest. It includes key moments from the ruler’s love story with Isla, told in his own voice.

Grim is certain to thrill listeners and test allegiances, leaving new and longtime fans second-guessing who they’re rooting for in the breathtaking battle for Isla’s heart.

I loved listening to this! The narrator’s voice is perfect for Grim and it felt so satisfying to finally get to see the story Isla had forgotten. The other books just weren’t complete without this part.

How wonderful to finally get the backstory that was hinted at in the other books!

It's so obvious who Isla chooses in the main series that these companion novellas read like a quick buck for the sake of hanging onto the books that made the author a bestseller.

What's the point?

I’ve just finished Grim by Alex Aster, and honestly, this one didn’t do much for me.

It felt less like a fresh companion story and more like Nightbane retold from Grim’s point of view. I went in hoping for new layers, hidden motives, deeper insight, or at least something that would reframe the events in a meaningful way. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel like much new information was uncovered.

Grim does live up to his name, though. He is very much grim — brooding, heavy, and emotionally locked away — but even that started to feel a little one-note after a while. I wanted more depth beneath the darkness, not just another pass over ground that already felt familiar.

For readers who absolutely love Grim as a character, this may still be worth picking up. For me, it felt too repetitive and didn’t add enough to justify itself.

UGH!
