Story
In the first book, Hadjar lost it all. His body ruined, parents dead, and his title of Prince replaced by a slave collar. It seemed like Primus had deprived him of everything. But no one can take away a man's will to fight. Even if his heart turns into a bleeding stone due to endless grief and suffering, it won't matter. The most important thing was that he still had the will to go on. The thought of taking revenge on his family's murderers gave him the strength to survive. After receiving a piece of the mighty Dragon's heart, he regained his strength and enlisted in the army, where he made real friends and fought by their side in many battles.

Story
He was born anew in a world where martial arts were indistinguishable from magic. He only received a neuronet and meaningless desires from his past life. What lies ahead? He dreamed of adventure and freedom, but those dreams were taken away from him. The same way his mother, father, and sister had been taken away. They took the kingdom, they took his own destiny. But he is willing to wage a war, against the whole world if need be, to bring everything back.

Story
When William stumbles through a portal in the middle of Antarctica, he'll suddenly find himself in a world unlike any he's ever known. Now, he's surrounded by monster girls, vicious warlords, and everything in between. Worse, his only weapon is a magical branding iron, which seems to have one skill and one skill only, to overwrite slave brands. Thing is, monster girls seem pretty grateful about being freed from the tyranny of their masters, and with each one he brands, the stronger he becomes.

Story
As usual, Montana Coggeshall is hell-bent on doing what's right, even if what's right isn't exactly what's wise. So he embarks on a quest to vanquish the corrupted ursus, a threat so large they could destroy the entire world of iNcarn8. Does Montana head out after months of training for cold weather conditions, amassing an army, and strategizing with his top aides? Not really. It's more like he just walks out of his holding one day with a guide and the members of his hirð. They're just a bunch of angry teddy bears, right?

Story
Montana Coggeshall is feeling the squeeze - and not just because of his new leather pants from the goddess Eona. His little safeholding in the ruthless world of Vuldranni is under siege. On both sides. At the front is Lord Caticorix, a grade-A Imperial flunkey if there ever was one. He's clearly ridiculous, but the army he brought with him might not be. Plus they're bent on blocking Coggeshall from getting any food or supplies from the outside world.

Simply A Good Listen!
Alright everyone, I've finished my listen through of Max Farmer's "Grim Beginnings" here are my highlights :) Portal fantasy (already makes it higher on my list then most, i'm a fan of portals personally). With an extremely interesting premise, a fascinating big bad / big... good? We will find out in later books, that is the impetus for the entire "portal" thing. MC gets into the world and gets thrown in the middle of a war between Bad - A Orcs and some real nasty Knolls. savagery ensues, along with some hijinks. Over all the book is a fantastic addition to the genre, a fun romp through a game world, with some high stakes and awesome fights. All with a fascinating backdrop of an epic fantasy game system esq world that the story doesn't lose sight of which can sometimes be a problem in portal fantasies. Particularly for new writers in the genre. I'm not going to give it a score, because I'm not a 'professional' reviewer I'm just sharing stuff with y'all I really enjoyed :) So go pick this one up if you get a chance or are looking for another portal fantasy. PS: Bonus points for being PG-13 Max, thanks for that bro :) Doesn't shy away from adult topics and subjects, but addresses them in a tactful way that I personally appreciated. PPS: The narrator, Armen Taylor knocked this out of the PARK! Great job!

warning it's a slow start
I like books like this when the story takes some time to let you get to know the characters and understand the world it's not an amazing story or something brand new but its it's pretty good.

Grim and (polar) Bear it.
Really good portal LitRPG book. The story moves along well, if slow on leveling, with well rounded characters. The book can get a bit crunchy on stats, but no more than any other LitRPG series. Armen Taylor did an amazing job narrating.

Suffers from stat-bane
A fairly entertaining story that would have been rated higher if not for the drudgery of listening through heavily-laden stat recitals that offers the listener very little useful information and a lot of internal deliberation on "should I go through the back&forth ff/rewind cycle until I get to the end of the stat dump section?". This follows a number of other litRPG novels where the MC has the ability to acquire all sorts of skills beyond what other players experience which ends up assisting him against much higher level enemies. As mentioned, the story isn't really bad; just not very good either. Worth the listen if you've got a spare credit burning a hole in your pocket.

Slow and slow
The MC stumbles through the whole story with the author spending most of the time with showing how okay a guy he is before something uncontrollable happens that does little to help his insanely slow progress. Pats himself on the back for being level 3 at Chapter 18.

It's a lot of fun!
This book was a lot of fun to listen to - it's quite fast paced so I'll definitely need another listen to take in all the details, but I had a really good time with it. I expected it to have a serious tone and the book doesn't pull its punches on the dramatic moments, but it's also quite witty. Look forward to checking out other books in the series!

Janitor gamer given a 2nd chance
When I saw the cover I though it was going to be a meat head barbarian character, but instead it was an gaming - janitor tasked to assist an imprisoned being. He gets some death magic and an orc friend to help in his quest. A nice story of making friends and defeating the enemy.

A bright new series
A bright new start to series with a lot of potential, I particularly liked the world and lore building, and you’ve got to love the janitor who gets the chance to kick ass!
