It's the second-to-last day of archaeological field school. The students are working on a prehistoric gravesite when a much more recent burial is uncovered. The skeleton is articulated, the bone fresh, and the vertebrae still connected by soft-tissue. It's a case forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan has to take. But her investigations soon have her in too deep - her entire view of humanity is challenged, and the further she probes, the more she seems to be putting herself in danger.

Story
"Death by self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head" is the on-scene assessment, but the victim's relatives are adamant in their rejection of suicide as an explanation. Discovered in a closet, a full week after death, the body is barely recognisable. Extreme heat has accelerated decomposition, and Dr Temperance Brennan's forensic expertise is required. Advanced putrefaction has made it virtually impossible to determine the trajectory of the bullet.

Story
On the way to Isle of Palms, a barrier island off the South Carolina coast, forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan receives a call from the Charleston coroner. During the storm, a medical waste container has washed up on the beach. Inside are two decomposed bodies wrapped in plastic sheeting and bound with electrical wire. Chillingly, Tempe recognizes many details as identical to those of an unsolved case she handled in Quebec 15 years earlier.

Story
The compelling new Dr. Temperance Brennan novel from the world-class forensic anthropologist and number-one best-selling author Kathy Reichs. When forensic anthropologist Dr. Tempe Brennan is approached by amateur detective Hazel 'Lucky' Strike, at first she is inclined to dismiss the woman's claims that she's matched a previously unidentified set of remains with a name.
Publisher's Summary
Guatemala, in the searing heat. The bones of a child no more than two years old are uncovered when mass graves are excavated.
Twenty-three women and children are said to lie where forensic anthropologist Dr Temperance Brennan is searching for remains, in what is one of the most heartbreaking cases of her career.
Then four young girls go missing from Guatemala City...And when a skeleton is found in a septic tank at the back of a run down hotel, only someone with Tempe's expertise can deduce who the victim was and how they died. But her path is blocked: it appears that some people would prefer that Guatemala's 'disappeared' stayed buried. And others seem to want the missing girls kept the same way...

Tragic, gruesome, but brilliant!
Grave Secrets by Kathy Reichs is tragic and gruesome, but absolutely brilliant. Tempe travels to Guatemala to help sort through bones at a mass grave site. When a local detective takes her to a motel, where they discover the bones of a young woman in the septic tank. Together they investigate with Andrew Ryan, and uncover a larger plot, but someone in the Guatemalan government does not want them to uncover the truth. Katherine Borowitz delivers a great performance of the audiobook bringing the tragedy and horror of the situation to life.

Good but not gripping
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Only to keep in touch with the Temperance Brennan journey
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
The story line was essentially all there but the story jumped from one crime to another so quickly that it was hard to keep up
Did Katherine Borowitz do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?
Katherine doesn't present the story with much more than a mild accenting of the different characters, she struggles with the men, but halfway through the book this seemed to improve, perhaps as a result that I began to identify with the characters a bit more
Do you think Grave Secrets needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
There is already a follow up book in this series, which is sadly not available on Audible (so far)

Hard to stick with almost boring!
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Love Kathy Reichs but this was to complicated and hard to follow! Not for me!
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Possibly where it was set that is what drew me this book originally
Did Katherine Borowitz do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?
No problems with narration
Did Grave Secrets inspire you to do anything?
No! Nearly gave up half way only inspired me to ask for my 'credit' back
Any additional comments?
Have loved all her previous books this was not for me
