Can a good company become a great one? If so, how?

After a five-year research project, Jim Collins concludes that good to great can and does happen. In this book, he uncovers the underlying variables that enable any type of organisation to make the leap from good to great while other organisations remain only good. Rigorously supported by evidence, his findings are surprising - at times even shocking - to the modern mind.

Good to Great achieves a rare distinction: a management book full of vital ideas that reads as well as a fast-paced novel. It is widely regarded as one of the most important business books ever written.

Dated, questionable conclusion

The research method used in this book is questionable.

The population is merely 20+ companies, in different industries. There is no causal link established between the level 5 leadership and success of these companies. This book feels more like a bag of pithy phrases rather than something can be qualified as research and drive meaningful result in real life.

I won't recommend this book.

Old content. Very verbose. Not worth it.

Too be fair, it was written a long time ago. But most of the themes feel obvious now. Nothing revolutionary.

Also examples are very US focused. Hard to relate to brands I’ve never heard of.

Unsure why this book has a good rep.

awesome book

loved it, great book, well researched, balanced and thought-out. however, putting music in a book is quite possibly the single most annoying thing I've experienced in an audio book. please cut the BS music it's horrendous, honestly it's a book, come in guys remove that rubbish for an otherwise 5 star ebook

Enthralling rigorous research

Engaging findings with immediate applicability. Rigorous research presented in a very engaging manner. Good balance of statistical information, interview data, and story telling.

Scam beware, way out of date

What got me was that Amazon stated release date year 2020. In this book Jim mentioned written in 2001. No way I would have bought it knowing that this highly priced book., is already 20 years old. Some of the so called hedge hog companies doesnt even exist anymore (bankrupt). From Jim's other book Great by Choice. The SMaC recipe also can't be trusted. Why because there is no way the mentioned level 5 leaded circuit City company had any chance of surviving, the allowed only upto 20% Change. This would not have been enough to over come the problems it faced in the internet age. Online internet sales killed this company. These books cannot be trusted any more in today's new age. The books should have been removed from the market along time back. New revisions should have taken there places. What happened to the passion for teaching? Did more book sales turned into greed?. Shame on the author and Amazon for misleading for more sales

Great Business Book

Recommended by a successful CEO, now I know why. Very insightful book with several key topics. Summary would not do it justice and would highly recommend to anyone and everyone. The fact that it is ready by Jim Collins gives the book alot of depth that is highly appreciated. 5 out of 5 for sure.

Research is key

I find myself often giving out 5 stars to books who do an overwhelming amount of research, perhaps this is one the traits that make a book great ;D

Gold standard for business.

Having built a great business, I began to feel a little lost and no longer had some of the initial vision I had building my business. This book has reminded me of the steps I took initially and has oriented me back on the path to greatness.

A change of Paradigm

An eye opening listen detailing how companies can take themselves to the next level. Yes most of the companies are no longer in business but as he states its the principles they have discovered that stage companies out the monotonous average "good" status.

I recommend listening to this audio book at 1.5x speed it follows much nicer and drags a little less

Not Good or Great - 50% talking about itself

This book spends so much time talking about itself, almost boaatfully. It's dull and repetitive.

There is a small part of it that is useful, the rest is just padding.

After about 3 chapters Jim tells us that he'll give us bullets at the end of each chapter reminding us what was just talked about in the chapter... Padding to remind us about padding. Painful.

Take the Level 5 detail. It explains what Level 5 managers are then does the same in about 5 different ways, then explains again 3 times where companies failed.

This book could literally be cut in half and become far more useful. It would turn the book from fair to good.

Very strong

Really useful anecdotes and use of counter factual examples helps bring to life the point.

Good vignettes support the argument.

Sometimes a bit repetitive- but easy to skip those parts

Good but not Great

Well, this is an old book now so I guess some things can be forgiven but not 7 minutes of acknowledgements or over emphasing words to suggest impact or importance.

I don't prescribe to 'do the things great people do and you'll be great' message that seems to be the norm now - the habit this and steps that is old we are all different with different teams, objectives and resources etc so find your own way with what you have available...!

That said, Jims research does a decent job of highlighting factors that generally help businesses/leaders reach the top of their game and so I give this book 3 stars overall which is a shame as I was expecting Greatness and not moderate to good.

Good scientific study

Great book that not only gives good advice but backs it with studies instead of opinions. I can greatly recommend this book.
