Publisher's Summary

Dry meets Hatchet in this thrilling tale of survival following a teen girl who must lead her friends across the country to the safety of her estranged father’s survivalist compound after a mass power failure leaves the country in chaos.

When 17-year-old Zara escaped her father’s backwoods survivalist compound five years ago, she traded crossbows and skinning hides for electricity and video games...and tried to forget the tragedy that drove her away.

Until a malware attack on the United States electrical grids cuts off the entire country’s power.

In the wake of the disaster and the chaos that ensues, Zara is forced to call upon skills she thought she’d never use again - and her best bet to survive is to go back to the home she left behind. Drawing upon a resilience she didn’t know she had, Zara leads a growing group of friends on an epic journey across a crumbling country back to her father’s compound, where their only hope for salvation lies.

But with every step she takes, Zara wonders if she truly has what it takes to face her father and the secrets of her past or if she’d be better off hiding in the dark.

Fascinating insight into a Doimsday scenario

Gone Dark is one of those books which was a surprising find. I thought initially i was reading a YA dystopian adventure, but it quickly became evident this was so much more. I feel like this is one of those books in which the reader actually learns from fiction.

Zara is a typical 17 year old more interested in computers than people, her personal history makes it challenging, due to living in a Doomsday Prepper compound made her fearful of the outside world.
Years on she lives with her mother and the end of the world hasn’t happened- yet.

When most of the continent’s power grid goes off line, Zara is forced back into her past, reviving dormant skills and memories which she’d thought long buried. The plot is filled with questing which notches up the tension and pace. It quickly becomes evident in a society with no power many will perish.

I listened to the audiobook of this, and i must say the narrator did an excellent job- it was one of those stories i did not want to stop listening to. Though this is a YA story it has mature themes (see CW) and reminded the reader how ill equiped i’d be if this were to happen. I found the information on survivalist skills fascinating, combined with a suspenseful and well paced plot I was really hooked on Gone Dark.

Though i anticipated who the villain/s were in the story, their outcomes were not expected, which left an edge of suspense to the ending.

A thoroughly enjoyable story with themes of friendship, found family, redemption and coming of age. A fantastic narration - i am going to check out more of the authors and narrators work.

Too real to feel comfortable

I liked this book but wow did it feel too real. I didn't like how the ending was rushed with little detail, feel like a lot more information could have been slipped in there
