About this listen

From the New York Times bestselling and Edgar Award-winning author Adrian McKinty comes the origin story of his most famous creation, Detective Sean Duffy.

Belfast, 1980, is the apocalypse. Bombings, riots, army on the streets, low flying helicopters, and ever-present rain. The grinding Northern Irish civil war between Protestants and Catholics has been going for a decade now. Hated by both sides are the police.

Sean Duffy Year 1 takes us into that world. Newly promoted Detective Sergeant Sean Duffy is given his first command at Carrickfergus CID.

In this prequel novella, McKinty takes listeners through Duffy’s first two weeks on the job. A case to solve and a chance to impress his bosses, if, of course, he can get out of it alive.

As a huge Sean Duffy fan it was nice to read this prequel. The author brings the people alive with entertaining dialogue and wry moments. You feel as if you have actually visited Northern Ireland. Plots good too.

Pacy intelligent writing

I love everything Adrian McKinty does - when I saw a new book available I jumped at the change to get it - and didn't even look at the length of it - I just couldn't believe that it was finished before it had even begun - I am not sure if I would or wouldn't have spent a credit on it if I had realised before hand that it was as quick as it was - maybe not.

Awesome - just gutted to find out it was so short

I love seeing Sean and Crabbys' relationship from the start. Sean just wants to best for the good people around him. Listening to Gerard Doyle bring all the characters to life is easy St and believable. I can't wait to go through the full series again!

Sean Duffy is introduced to the ones in control.

I know it was a novella but I would have loved a bit more. I smiled when we met Crabby and enjoyed seeing Duffy step into his role. And of course there is Gerard’s voice.❤️

Adore this series and loved the little prequel. Adrian McKinty is an incredible writer and Gerard Doyle equally good as a narrator. They never disappoint!

Perfect as always

He’s like no other detective in the political world of Belfast in the troubles. Five stars!
