About this listen

What if the films Grumpy Old Men and Back to the Future collided in a Sunday school class?

Senior citizens are one of the more difficult groups of God’s children to deal with on church campuses because they already know everything there is to know about everything, including how to run a church. In 2007, that was certainly true at Mountain Top Community Church in Mesa, Arizona, a suburb of Phoenix.

So, when 56-year-old energy industry analyst Sam Slouch was invited to lead a class for those in the Hospice Preschool community, he wasn’t thrilled. What could possibly be the joy, hope, or fun in doing that? Well, occasionally God seems to know what he’s doing. Thus, Sam took on the sometimes challenging and sometimes charming nature of the high mileage crowd.

But how did he get on this luxury passenger train? Sam didn’t remember boarding. Where had it come from? Where was it going? And who were these other travelers? Sam had no idea. He was clearly lost.

Written for those of us who are on the back nine of life, God, Geezers, and Golf is occasionally irreverent, fittingly humorous, and appropriately poignant. This short listen offers a heartwarming take on the ups and downs of senior citizen church life through the lens of one man’s journey.
