About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The hilarious memoir from comedian, Off Menu host and Great British Menu judge, Ed Gamble. Includes an exclusive bonus interview between Ed Gamble and fellow comedian and food-lover, Nish Kumar.

From a young age, Ed Gamble's immaculate bibs and extremely dirty nappies hinted at his capacious appetite. Before he could walk, Ed already knew that he preferred poached salmon to puree, that celery was a calorie-sapping waste of time, and that mashed potatoes should be made with lashings of butter.

Whilst he might ordinarily have been upset by the calls of 'precocious little s--t' coming from his family, he was too busy stuffing his gob and staging rebellions against the patronising list of misery that is a children's menu.

In Glutton, Ed shares a relatable buffet of experiences and stories from a life lived through food. From the trials of being a diabetic with a sweet tooth to his teenage battles with obesity, to the joy of cooking and the power of food to bring us together, this is a wonderful, hilarious and heart-warming memoir of a delightful obsession.

I only knew Ed Gamble from Off Menu podcast, so didn’t know his background and wasn’t sure what to expect, but found this a surprisingly warm and funny listen with some very interesting and thoughtful musings. Ed’s reading of the book was a little quick at times, but overall well delivered.

Enjoyable

As a fan of Ed Gamble, and of food, it was an enjoyable listen! Overall, it's a Gamble Ramble mostly about his favourite foods, Guinness, wine and cheese. There are a good amount of personal stories and Ed Gamble shares honestly and with some vulnerability about his 7 stone weight loss and growing up and a "big fat boy". The "secret" to his weight loss (spoiler alert) is eating less and exercising more. It is a realistic and relatable memoir and had me chuckling through it. I would recommend to fans of Ed Gamble, Taskmaster or Off Menu podcast but if you have never heard of him you will probably find most of the book unremarkable. There are no particularly extraordinary stories and there is nothing revolutionary in this book.

Entertaining, relatable, nothing extraordinary.
