Publisher's Summary
When Zoe Barry walks into Professor David Connolly's office and announces that she is his daughter, he is left reeling. Suddenly his family - imperfect, flawed but working - is trying to find space for someone new. But Zoe's stories don't quite add up, and lies become indistinguishable from truths.
The family struggle to make sense of whether she is a sister, a daughter, a friend, an enemy. But no one could have expected where it all might end. Because they have let into their home a girl that they do not know. And now everything they have built has begun to violently, determinedly, break apart.

Absolutely loved this!
Any additional comments?
I came across a recommendation for this on deadgoodbooks and thought I would give it a try. So glad I did as I loved it. It is not a book with lots of twists, turns and shocks, but it has a sense of menace underlying the story. It's well written, with well drawn characters and great narration.

Good and kept my attention
I like these books about these sociopaths. Every time I read or listen to one I think, ‘I know a freak like that!’ It Is refreshing to know that these abnoxious troublemakers are, at least in books, caught out and banished.
The story was good, the performance was good, it was a good length, and the narrator was not annoying which is not easy to find it seems.
Had to pause it when I left the room so know I was enjoying it all the way through. Story was believable and the characters were very human and easy to relate to. Even the dud of a husband that was manipulated by this foolish girl was believable....or maybe that is just a testament to some of the people I know.
You won’t be thrown about on a ‘rollercoaster’ but it will keep your interest all the way through. Worth the dosh.

Too long but some good twists
The narrator for Catherine was very good indeed. One kept feeling they knew what was coming but there were the occasional twists to keep the interest going. I have to say that I seem to be reading books where if the "victim" hadn't been quite so useless they wouldn't have been a "victim". A bit unfair I suppose because if we were all invincible there wouldn't be thrillers!

Okish
It was an ok listen. The performance was ok, it was hard to feel attached to the the characters though. The ending was disappointing though as I was expecting more of a dramatic ending after the build up.

Insightful into the human psyche
A very good story on making the reader understand that we may love our children, but we are not really privy to their thoughts & feelings. That although we want desperately to protect them we make a lot of assumptions re the status quo. And also how tied up we as adults are in our work, sadnesses , & how we are affected by events. The rights of the child are seldom heard. A bit bland in its descriptions. For example I would have preferred it if instead of saying " I felt apprehension " that the author described how the person was feeling, so the reader could 1/2 way experience the apprehension . There was so much of a reporting type idiom rather than taking the reader into the mind of the character. On the other hand it was a good plot. But also 1 that was not original.
