About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Girl Online, the stunning debut novel from Zoe Sugg, aka Zoella, read by Hannah Tointon.

I have this dream that, secretly, all teenage girls feel exactly like me. And maybe one day, when we realise that we all feel the same, we can all stop pretending we're something we're not... But until that day, I'm going to keep it real on this blog and keep it unreal in real life.

Penny has a secret.

Under the alias Girl Online, Penny blogs her hidden feelings about friendship, boys, high school drama, her crazy family, and the panic attacks that have begun to take over her life. When things go from bad to worse, her family whisks her away to New York, where she meets Noah, a gorgeous, guitar-strumming American. Suddenly Penny is falling in love - and capturing every moment of it on her blog.

But Noah has a secret, too, one that threatens to ruin Penny's cover - and her closest friendship - forever.

Would you listen to Girl Online again? Why?

Maybe

What did you like best about this story?

Everything! But I guess mainly going to New York and meeting Noah and just the character Penny in general.

What does Hannah Tointon bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

An accent and a different voice to the character which changed my perception in a good way.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not as first, but when I got into the story, YES!

Unexpectedly Really Good!

Between buying this and listening to it, I found out about the whole ghost writing controversy, and I went into it expecting it to be like Gossip Girl, etc - commodified trash. I was really surprised though, to find that not only did I like this book, I LOVED it. As a children's literature student who has read a LOT of YA novels in the past year, I can confidently say that this was definitely one of the best. In parts it's a little fantastic, but who cares? We all need a little escape from reality sometimes, and that doesn't necessarily have to come in the form of dragons and vampires. Aside from that, it was a very real and considered portrayal of a character with anxiety issues, which I really appreciated.

So much better than expected.
