Kept me engaged

The opening turned me off immensely but the writing kept me listening. The way Kennedy wrote of how the protagonist was feeling was so different to how I would have felt yet it made sense as I kept listening. It was engaging and even made me like the king.
The end however was a disappointment for me. (Spoiler alert)
I didn’t like having the king’s POV thrown in at the end. I would have fathered it from the start or not at all.

Wasn’t what I was expecting, but still a great story

I live fantasy romance books, like fourth wing, ACOTAR etc, and this is not a romance. It is more like a dark retailing of a fairy tale. The main character is a little annoying for the first half of the story, but it ends with her character becoming more self aware and interesting. I will be reading the next book.

disappointing and boring

I know this book is really popular, but for the life of me I cannot figure out why.
The book is slow and boring, and when stuff FINALLY begins to happen, the book ends.
The protagonist is hard to empathise with, and I cannot get past the barrage of unnecessary sex scenes and casual abuse. Whilst I like my spicy books, this one was done so poorly, though probably used in an attempt to distract from the glacial plot and one dimensional characters.
Honestly, I don't understand the hype with these books, Sail (Sayle? unsure of spelling as this is an audiobook) was the only somewhat developed character.
I won't be reading the rest of the series.

Might Gild my ears

The story has potential, and I would like to see where it goes but randomly the writer has inserted flash backs on the main characters life that really doesn't provide a point to where the story is going.
The writing will fixate for a while on the mains thoughts, going back and forth in an internal monologue that leads nowhere and is frustrating to listen to.

The narrators voice switches mid sentence like she missed lines and someone had to fill in. She acts out the main character to be a whining brat.

It's difficult to listen to, would recommend buying and reading this instead, might enjoy it better.

Has potential - Voice reader choice for this not great!

I struggled so hard to get past the narrator. She sounded like a whining teenager, it really took away from the heavier elements.

Dragged on forever and ultimately not much really happens?

I hate that I’ve already purchased the rest of the books in the series because if this first one is any indication of how the rest will be… 🫠

Couldn't handle the voice

DNF - Had high hopes and the story had potential but the FMC felt like a complaining child. The audio voice did nothing to help that and was. ery jarring - it felt like I was listening to a teenage complaining in a never ending monologue.

Long-winded and boring.

Well written and very descriptive, but the plot is boring. I kept hoping it would get better. Very disappointed.

I’m not sure

When I first started listening, I didn’t know if I would enjoy this book or not. It seemed like Auren had almost Stockholm syndrome towards King Midas. She was caged up, but yet longed for him. It just didn’t make any sense and even though the story progressed, I still feel like there’s something missing like the story wasn’t presented fully in the first book about how their relationship started to where it was in the beginning of the book. I think the adventure and her making friends with the guards was a great storyline, but I don’t know if I want to find out what happens next or not. It is intriguing, but is it worth the money?

This is golden magic

This narrator is much better than the other edition.
Adult fantasy at its best

Not a fan of the narrators

I finished reading the books and decided to try the audio version and think the Narrators dont fit the feel of the book, but thats just my personal opinion.

For those who have not read the book yet, I highly recommend it.

it was...okay

it's okay, I didn't really "grab" me. I am hard to please as I love alot of "build upto a plot and also a "build up" to the steamy bits.. and I found this was a little.. shallow. not the content mind. content was very explicit...however I feel more "foreplay of story building " was needed... I couldn't quite dive into it as I have with others. again..I'm hard to please.
it may of been different perhaps with a different narrator... the tempo and pace of the voice would have been better suited for a comedy story I feel.. it was all very samey throughout every scene when going through different scenes regarding emotional expressions etc.. so that may have lost it for me. every line was spoken in a "matter of fact" tone...I need more range in contrasting scenes to get my mind engrossed. again..I'm a hard pleaser (if that's a word)
might not get the 2nd book.

DNF

I tried three times with this book as I have seen it recommended all over Booktok. I just couldn't get on with it. To say the protagonist was passive would be an understatement. I got about twenty chapters in and it STILL didn't really feel like she had done anything or had any purpose. There's nothing really to invest in, no questions raised that I want to have answered. So I'm returning. It's not for me.

Same story different author

Suggest you listen to a sample of the story first as the narrators blocked nose voice might give you the serious ick.
Overal the story is grand, it’s pretty predictable and follows the same format as most recent novels in this genre.
The story has the potential to be something more but it lacks any depth or substance.

Very slow

I enjoyed the last few chapters and the first few ones but the rest of it was so slow and painful to get through. The only thing keeping me going was the amazing narrator. Hopefully the next book will be better.

DNF

Dreadful writing (with no world building or engaging characters) made worse by the narrators nasal tone.

solid scene setting and world building first book

found it hard to distinguish between characters at times as a lot of the narrative sounded very similar

I understand the hype. So glad I finally decided to read this. It was entertaining, unique and twisted. The narrator did a great job 👌🏾

Great story but annoying performance!

I have read all of the Plated Prisioner books on my kindle but wanted to listen to the story in the car etc. I love the Story and the characters, however the voice used for Auren is like a whiney teenager and not a 25 year old woman. I fear listening to the rest of the books of the series because it was a struggle to get through this one.
