Publisher's Summary

As one of the youngest ever winners of the Grand National, Nick ‘Foxy’ Foxton’s career as a world-class jockey is on perfect track until a near-fatal accident cuts his dream brutally short. But when he returns to Aintree as a spectator years later, nothing can prepare him for what unfolds.

Minutes before the biggest event on the racing calendar, Nick’s affable American colleague Herb Kovak is shot at point-blank range, the gunman disappearing among the stunned crowd. Along with the police, Nick is left baffled as to why anyone would want to kill such an apparently gentle soul.

With the press speculating links to gangland crime and a crumpled note containing a threatening message found in the dead man’s coat, Nick begins to doubt how well he really knew Herb. And on discovering Herb had named him as the benefactor of his will, Nick questions why he has been entrusted with the legacy. Is this a generous gift from a friend or is it, in fact, a poisoned chalice?

In his father's footsteps

A good Francis novel but the ending was a bit too sharp for my liking. Narration was very good and it was easy to get lost in the characters.

His father's son

Felix has produced a story with pace and excitement, set in the familiar backdrop (to Dick Francis fans) of equestrian pursuits.

An enjoyable thriller, which is characterised and delivered well by Michael Maloney.

The most appropriate compliment I can think of is... “one for all the Dick Francis fans”.

As good as his Dad

This is a great listen. From the first page I was gripped, staying up late to finish it. Michael Maloney's narration is speedy and exciting and his characterisation is superb. The twists at the end are excellent. Highly recommended!

Following in his Father's footsteps

As a great fan of Dick Francis I was very sad to think that there would be no new titles coming along for me to enjoy. Then I bought "Gamble" by his son, Felix.

Here was all the excitement, the fast-moving story, the ingenious twists and the satisfying climax that I had come to expect in the Dick Francis books, and I was gripped! So often when a different writer takes over from a long established favourite the result is disappointing but Felix Francis, who had collaborated with his father before the death of Dick Francis, has succeeded in keeping the tradition alive.

I hope Felix Francis will continue to write more novels and I shall look forward to his next book.

Over complicated

Have been a Dick Francis fan for years and loved the balance of intrigue, mystery, different relationships between people and romance in his books together with all the fascinating stuff about being in the world of horse racing This novel shows where Felix is so different as the balance seems to be gone and parts of the storyline felt superfluous. Certain parts also felt very familiar and I'm sure have been previously used by Dick in other books..
This one also had long and boring sections of romance ( think Mills and Boon) and illness just to increase the pain. At times it felt like a medical text book and really was completely unnecessary for the plot or story line.in conclusion worth a punt if your a real Dick Francis fan but bear in mind it wasn't written by him and hopefully you won't be disappointed.

terrible narration

a great story full of the usual gripping story lines from the Francis empire. What a shame that the whole thing was spoilt by such terrible narrating! The accents were terrible, the intonation drove me to distraction. I would certainly avoid this narrator again.

Great story badly read

This is possibly the worst reading I have ever heard of anything. Such a shame as it’s a really good story

Another great story from the Francis stable....

I enjoyed this story immensely especially as it hadn’t been ‘Americanised’ like so many others I have listened to. Good story, good pace, good characterisation by the author and the reader created a cracking read.

The dramatic pause

the narrator is too in love... with... the dramatic pause. Made finishing this really hard work.

Not quite Dick Francis

Nearly as good as his father but the twists are more signposted. Narrator not as good as previous Francis books.
