Michèle Simonsen er født og opvokset i Frankrig. Blev uddannet som filmklipper på Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinématographiques i Paris, mens det endnu foregik ved hjælp af saks, lim og barberblade. I 1962 flyttede hun til England og i 1967 til Danmark. Michèle er cand. mag i fransk og engelsk med speciale i renæssancelitteratur og folkelitteratur, og har været lektor på Københavns Universitet, først på Romansk Institut 1972-83 og siden på Institut for Folkemindevidenskab, senere omdøbt til Institut for Folkloristik, fra 1983 til 1998. I 2000-2001 gik Michèle på Forfatterskolen for Børnelitteratur (DPU) i 2000-2001.
