Lama Yeshe didn't see a car until he was 15 years old.

In his quiet village, he and other children ran in fields with yaks and mastiffs. The rhythm of life was anchored by the pastoral cycles. Food was carefully apportioned and eaten together, everyone was family.

The arrival of Chinese army cars one day in 1959 changed everything.

In the wake of the deadly Tibetan Uprising, he escaped to India through the Himalayas to start over as a refugee. One of only 13 survivors out of 300 travellers, he spent the next few years in America, experiencing the excesses of the Woodstock generation before reforming in Europe.

Now in his 70s and a leading monk at the Samye Ling monastery in Scotland - the first Buddhist centre in the West - Lama Yeshe casts a hopeful look back at his momentous life. One if my favourite books ever

I loved this book. An inspiring story of a young mans journey, first his humble beginnings with his loving family and community to then realising that all his understanding of his secure home life is about to change forever. He bravely traverses all of this and more but ultimately he has to live out his demons in order to find his own salvation but also to becoming one of the most inspiring teachers of Buddhism the world has had the privilege to embrace. I highly recommend this book.

I have never heard of Lama Yeshe Losal Rinpoche before but I found his story very interesting as I am interested in meditation and helping myself after struggling with depression and anxiety for many years. I found this similar to Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche's telling of his struggles and just as enjoyable.
This is not a story of a young boy born into monk-hood who lived a privileged life and gained enlightenment with ease. This is a story of regular young man who faced adversity and entered western culture to discover many of the same struggles that face many of us.
This is an easy listen and does not require a lot of previous knowledge of the culture or religion. If you have some interest in self improvement and want to hear how one man overcame many life obstacles to find his path in life then you will enjoy this book.

I really loved this book and had to listen to immediately again. Wonderful storytelling paired with an exciting, unusual little and interesting insights into Tibetan history and Buddhism. Very uplifting.
